My pre-climb routine usually involves about 8 minutes of stretching while focusing on my breathing and trying ot visualize each move of my redpoint. I really try to focus on my center of gravity while in stretching. I clear my mind of everything else as I tie in and make sure to chalk up real wel. By this time I'm usually calm and relaxed enough to send the route.

If your outside, it's always nice to focus on some scenery for a few minuets to calm yourself and your breathing.

oh yeah dude! before every climb i do some energy work with the rock... i give it some energy and she returns the favor... i always express my appreciation to the rock for letting me on board... some times i feel what the rock feels... midnight lightning is probably the most memorable... whenever im up high and get nervous, talking a breather, looking around and sucking it in always helps... becoming one with the rock is a must for me... its more of a spiritual experience thatn a sport for me... climb on ninja!

I meditate most mornings and when I need to collect myself. At the most mundane level, meditation is like brushing the teeth of your mind. Peace karl

In reply to: oh yeah dude! before every climb i do some energy work with the rock... i give it some energy and she returns the favor... i always express my appreciation to the rock for letting me on board... Right on. Sometimes when I'm on the sharp end and up a bit and having doubts, I talk to the rock. I climb best when I'm in tune with the spirit of nature. Maybe I should try that before climbing. This probably sounds flakey to some of you, but I swear it works wonders for me.

I just finished taking a yoga class this semester at college and it's really helped me relax, especially when it comes time to prepare to climb a route. But even more, climbing itself helps me relax and is sort of a meditation all by itself. Focusing on what I'm doing is a huge change from my busy work and classes.
