02-210 - City of Rocks NR (ID) - Climbing Fatality On May 27th, a visitor advised ranger Brad Shilling that a climbing accident had occurred at Parking Lot Rock. The unconscious victim, Kim Espino, 31, had fallen on the Delay of Game route and had sustained head injuries. Rescue units and a Life Flight helicopter responded. In the interim, Dr. John Tsciherhart, a surgeon in Espino's climbing party, had applied a makeshift C-collar constructed from towels and duct tape. Rescuers replaced it with a cervical collar and placed Espino on a spine board, then transferred her to the helicopter. Espino died the next day at Bannock Regional Medical Center. Investigators determined that she was the lead climber on the ascent when she'd fallen about 15 feet and sustained massive head injuries. [Wallace Keck, Superintendent, CIRO, 6/4] My sympathies to friends and family.

Wow! It does happen. Sorry. It seems that there are so many accidents being reported lately: this one, Yosemite had a couple recently, Hood, Ranier.... Let's be safe. Condolences to the family and friends of Kim.

I think it saddens everyone when we hear about climbing accidents. In this sport that we so much love, it stands as another reminder of how dangerous climbing really is. My condolences go out to the friends and family of Kim. Climb hard...climb safe.

A helmet would have done a WORLD of good for her in a 15 feet fall. I take this as a lesson. Condolences to all involved. Climb Safe,Climb Happy Mitch

One of the rangers informed me of this accident, and it somewhat changed my perspective. Let's face it.... our sport is dangerous. However, we don't ever want so loose those who are close to us. Condolences to her family. I am glad the memberhsip took a moment to speak of her as a name or face in the group... rather than her becomming just a statistic. (thanks Climberchk)
