Has anyone ever heard or climbed in this place? Supposedly a shutdown tourist attraction near Tuscaloosa with some big cliffs and weird rock formations.

I live in Birmingham (about 45 minutes from T-town in case you are unfamiliar) and I've never heard of it. There are a couple state parks near there, though. I've got a climber friend that lives in Tuscaloosa. I'll ask him and let you know.

Please tell me this is real! I'll be living in t-town for two years starting next summer. Good for football, bad for climbing, i thought....

I sure hope its real. But we need to approach this situation delicately so we can insure access.

Sounds cool, except:
In reply to: Inspired partly by the arrival of the nearby Mercedes-Benz plant, has started developing the area as a German-themed community This sentence lacks a subject. Was that an intentional omission, or was the article just that poorly edited? I'm sure if the owner really wants to make it a German-inspired community, it would be easy to present him with the idea of rock climbing. (Check out John Gill's site for some terrific 100-y-o photos of German boulderers.)

I'm a T-Town local, been here 22 years and hadn't heard of this place. One of my climbing partners used to write for the Tuscaloosa News, I'm sending him this link. He may be able to learn some more about it. Hey JTT, look us up at the local Alabama Outdoors. There's a little bouldering wall there that several folks climb on regularly. I'm usually there around 5 pm. on Tuesdays and then either Thursdays or Fridays. We carpool all over the state.

It's pretty chossy out there and LOTS of rednecks. Most folk from here just go to Boulderfield for a quickie or on up to HP40 if they wanna get real. I've been to Hurricane Creek a couple of times though. It ain't much, but it's better than watching TV.

It's in Homewood, close to the Galeria. Directions are here: http://www.rockclimbing.com/routes/North_America/United_States/Alabama/Central/Moss_Rock_Preserve__a_k_a__Shades_Crest_Boulderfields_/ It's easier to find if you go with someone who's been there before |
