is there anyone here that take trips out west mountianering I have been looking at some differant schools but most of them want you to have your own gear and was wandering what some of you use.

Hi Oz,
The basic equipment you must have is a harness, shoes, a locking carabiner and a belay device. I'd also carry a sling with a couple extra lockers, and two prusiks. Take a helmet, and a visor for the sun.
Many leaders don't expect any more out of you, but beyond this, a rope and some webbing to set up topropes is very useful.
Clothing is important, since hypothermia can kill you. Avoid cotton, have a fleece, wind shells. I find a camelback very useful on long routes. I carry a feed bag of nuts, dried fruits, bars and gels. Sunscreen. Lip gloss.
A sleeping bag, a stove, but this bleeds into camping/backpacking. This is all stuff I'll be taking to Joshua Tree in February. If you have any questions, bring em on.

I agree wih Mountainman though a sixer of a nice Belgian or Impy Stout is always a welcomed addition to the camp kit and might lead to repeat invitations

ok i have harness, shoes, belay device, 5 locking beaners, and 60m of rope and 2 6' sections of 1" webbing. but what is a prusiks? and any recamendations on a helmat and what do you carry for lead? I am just asking cause i wana move to colarado next spring and wana know what i will need in general. thanx for the help.

Why don't you call some schools you're interested in and see what equipment they recommend for their students?
If you don't know what a prusik is, you need some education! John Long has an excellent "How to Rock Climb book, which you can get from Amazon for only 10 dollars. Here's the link

There are many different racks for leading, depending on the route. Supertopo guides often give rack instructions for certain routes. Popular pro these days are cams, stoppers, hexes, etc.
However if you're going to lead sport, just get 10 quickdraws.
The problem is, telling you a rack to get and turning you loose on the world is like advising you on a parachute to buy and saying, 'have a nice trip'. You need knowledge and experience, which is best gained by finding a mentor. Someone who can guide and advise you as you gain experience. Without it, you'll be a great danger of becoming a climbing statistic.
But call the schools and see what they say. Why waste your mney buying stuff that you might never use? Most leaders buy stuff as they go along and see a need for it.

yes its closed but vc carl et al went down and had a fine day..I had a commitment too early to tag along and be back in time to make it worthwhile yesterday. I tried every spot I know of in the park today and while Century Wall was "dry" it had runnoff from the top every 10 feet.

Hello all, I am a climber in Pgh - haven't posted here because I haven't been actively climbing outside recently.
My house will be available for rent in the next couple weeks. This house has a nice basement climbing area. See my user id photo tab for a picture.
The specifics:
Climbing wall !!!
600/month + utilities
Spring Hill area of Pittsburgh (convenient to 28 and 279)
All appliances-washer/dryer/ref/dishwasher/stove
Two off street parking places
2/3 bedroom (third is captured)
1 large bathroom with boxed in tub/shower
Completely remodedeled inside & out
Double lot with no neighbors to the rear (wooded area behind property)
Partially finished basement w/ access from outside

Hey, y'all! Please please please tell me someone in northwestern PA is out there and looking for a climbing partner....I am pretty new to the area and now that I am settled, I am looking for a partner...I have a pretty good knowledge of areas in western and central PA, more in central pa...I have boulders, very large boulders, in my backyard, too...anyone enticed? I love to get out and have fun and climb. Let me know if anybody is interested, I'm seriously jonesin' for some rock...Josh

Josh, we're practically neighbors. I live in mercer and am always willing to climb with someone new. Those boulders in the backyard may be better than the mill anyhow. I can also introduce you to lots of climbers in the area. I climb with lots of folks from the pittsburgh area. If you are interested SRU has a nice indoor wall, cheap too. Pm me if interested. They start back to class monday.

Whatsamatau Just because it has been snowing then raining raining raining, and now its going to get colder n hell, no one wants to talk about climbing anymore. Ohhhh I forgot to mention that you couldn't get on the site for three days and if you could, you just got this, page can not be displayed thing. I've had to resort to the indoor wall. I am very sore. Can't wait for spring. Three weeks til ground hog day. yee haw. Then 6 wks. til saint pattys day and the week after that will be the long Easter weekend. We'll be climbing fore ya know it.

Hey all,
I learned to climb up in Pittsburgh with Phil Sidel and other POC/ECP people. I sure do miss the climbing community up there, I live in Cincinnati now, and its a lot harder to find people - though we do have 2 really nice gyms down here to climb at.
I'm actually working with some other people here to get an outdoors club off the ground. We'd love to do a joint trip with the ECP someday, if anyone's interested.
Oh, and who the heck put bolts on the Ross boulder?!?! Is that for real?!?! Talk about poor ethics.

hey, i'm from harrisburg area and right now is a great time to be bouldering........in my opinion anyway. i mostly climb on diabase rock (as says in my name). two areas are govenor stables and mt. gretna. if anyone ever wants to come out or have me show them around give me a message. i work at the climbnasium climbing gym, but anytime i'm not working or schooling i'd be glad to climb w/ anyone.
