total nOOb questions, for which I apologize: 1) bibs, or no bibs? 2) best pair of climbing pants for shorter climbers (inseam less than 29")? Currently looking at the Arcteryx Theta SK "short" model, wondering if there are any other's worth considering. Thanks in advance for any assistance. T Edited due to persnicketyness.

not being a "shorter climber" this may be speculation, but I do have some shell pants that are a bit long on me. I find I have no problem climbing in them since I'm wearing gaiters. just make sure the inseam fits right. nothing worse than feeling like it's creeping towards your knees.

Therein lies the problem - I've a 28.5" inseam, and legs that are 28" around at the thigh. There isn't a pair of pants - climbing, or otherwise - made that fits me off-the-rack, so to speak. Thanks for the insight; I will be wearing gaitors, and hopefully the suspenders will keep the pants from slipping down too much. T

26" inseam here. It's a pain in the ass, I tell you. Anyways, if you're looking for a shell, then both Arc'Teryx and REI make short versions of their XCR pants (last time I checked anyways). Some other companies claim to (Mountain Hardwear, for example), but I have not found any retailers (stores, online, whatever) that carry them. If you're going for soft shell, check out www.beyondfleece.com . As for the bib question ... I do not. Just make sure your jacket cinches up at the waist. - Seyil

A lot of people I know who climb use insulated Carhartt bibs. They're not completely waterproof, but it takes a long time for any water to get through. They also last a long time and are pretty crampon-resistant. If you're looking for just a shell though, these probably aren't what you're going to want. They come in lengths down to 28 as far as I've seen though. -jb

FYI Lowe Alpine and The North Face are two manufacturers that sell long, reg. and SHORT versions of their pants. The Long are hard to find at times so I imagine the short are also. Try SierraTradingPost.com and do a search for short. You'll get something.

I wore bibs for a few years and hated them. They're bulky and you can't control your temperature for crap without removing tons of clothing. Where and what type of climbing are you doing? Do you even need a hardshell? The gentleman who mentioned softshell pants is right on the money. Note: I have some Art Teryx hardshell pants that are pretty pimp. They pack like rain pants and are pretty light. Not to mention, they fit well, breath ok, and are relatively comfortable. Saying that, my next purchase will be softshell.
