Hi guys Just wondering about the climbing scene in Washington DC. I will be there for about 2 weeks in March and will have about 6 hours each day to waste between experiments at NIST in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Would be keener to climb outdoors but maybe it is too cold?? (please excuse my ignorance but cold weather is so rarely a problem when it comes to climbing in Australia...) Otherwise is there a good indoor gym that is easy to get public transport to? Thanks in advance Andrew

Earth Treks climbing in Columbia should be only a 30 min drive from Gaithersburg... www.earthtreksclimbing.com Awesome indoor climbing, bouldering cave... Outdoor climbing... Great Falls on the Virginia side of the Potomac River (off 495 beltway round DC) and Carderock on the Maryland side of the Potomac are good Have fun :)

Carderock and Sugarloaf would probably be the closest to Gaithersburg - maybe a 20-30 minute drive to each, but you'll need a car. Mostly toprope both places but you can practice trad at Sugarloaf. As for gyms, the only one I know to be accessible by metro is Sportrock Alexandria, about 1 hour's train ride away on the other side of the city.
