Gates are known to open on high fallfactors (>1.7) due to radial vibrations. This is proven by some frenchies in 1989 with a high speed camera on drop test. Usually that doesn't matter because most falls happen whilst sportclimbing where fallfactors are always smaller than 1 (at least on single pitch climbs) edit: The german alpine club safety council states that you can see deformations on the hook of broken biner (gate closed).
