I guess this really breaks down into three questions.

1) Whats the maximum driving distance, where you would still become a full time member of a gym.

2) What is the maximum distance you drive for an occasional indoor day climb.

3) Lets say your local gym was 20 minutes away. Would you drive 20 mins further to go to a significantly nicer gym over a close low quality gym.

If you feel inclined give details, explain your answers. I'd love to hear exactly how you feel about this.

1)
If only game in town I might drive up to 30 mins, though cursing and swearing every time and frantically trying to come up with new options for training at home, also would not be there near as often, if that far away.

2)
An hour, partially influenced by quality of gyms. If local sucks I'm much more likely to travel to a higher quality gym on weekend etc.

Currently I already do this in fact my local Rocreation (aka "the gym we love to hate") is just so so with often an indifferent staff, weekends I travel an hour to get to Hangar 18 much bigger and better in every way (except they charge for water wtf).

3)
Hell yah, though I'd probably go to the crappy gym at least one day during the week to save time. I currently already do this in fact. Rockreation is small and overcrowed with all the bouldering gym rats having a slumber party in the boulder area. Hanagar 18 is much bigger and doesn't allow that sort of behavior. Rockreation routes are also rated about a grade lower than other gyms to inflate the in crowds ego or something I have no idea.

So yeh obviously I'm not thrilled about going to the closer crappy gym, but practical matters force me to sometimes vs spending 1-1.5 hr each way to get to the other.
