trouble with climbing shirts, is that if you wear one, people come up and say things like, "oh my god, you climb!!!?! like, wow, rocks and stuff??!?!! isn't that so dangerous?? like, i totally climbed once, on this wall at camp..."

I just had a motherfucking epiphany. Make this shirt and I'll buy one. Start with this but instead of a cowbell, you've got a #11 hex!!! It's motherfucking brilliant. I just paid for your second divorce, you can thank me later.

It is a good idea. I slapped up some art and went to post it to ask "How's this" and see you have dlinz offering to make. So - he can do it for you then, but if for whatever reason it don't come down, get back to me and let me know if you want any changes on this art. It's not a big deal to draw the cord instead of wire as well. Damned ole schoolers.....

Happiegrrrl, it looks like you traced one of the standard pics of a BD hex but I like that better than the JPEG I used in my design. Go ahead and run with it although I'd suggest rotating the image 90 degrees clockwise (I thought it looked best that way on my design). As long as you don't use those cheap extra-long, heavy cotton t-shirts I'll definitely buy one. d.

....okay. Here is the change to cord and a little beefier text. I prefer the orientation as is, because it is the way a person would be setting the piece en route, and has an "active/positive energy" graphics-wise. Subliminal crap, like when they say always have the belayer in the picture actually looking at the leader to add a sense of engagement. If Angry has any changes he wants, I'll make those for him and then finish the job and post the link so people can find it. The shirt types are as on the other pages of my shop. Click on the link in my signature, or or quicker by clicking one of the links to the photos I posted upthread, so see what is available. There are several styles/qualities and I will pretty much put the design on them all so people could choose which they prefer. I have tested many of the styles and they are pretty decent quality. The organic cotton shirt is particularly nice and has a cream color as opposed to stark white. The good news is that CafePress has an excellent customer satisfaction policy, so if you get it and it sucks, or is the wrong size or just not what you expected, you can get an exchange or credit or refund. There will be a black on white in many of the styles, but I will also make different print colors on colored shirts(tan print on dark brown, or navy print on light blue shirt for example), and you can get an idea as to that by looking at other designs in my shop, like this page: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/5649523

....maybe I should do a side business of freelance design with people's requests....hahahah. god help me, that's why I left the fashion industry. The bouldering sign sounds like a cafepress design, and you might be able to find it by searching their site, but I have not seen it. Look up 'bouldering" and then it gives you a choice between choosing "Relevance"(best selling) and "Newest Arrivals"(newest designs added to the site). It's probably many, many pages back, with a lot of garbage to weed through. But, if you don't find it by next week, I would be willing to make it up for you and add it to my shop. I actually have wanted to do some other road sign designs for a long time and have procrastinated greatly. This weekend is rain and I may be sitting in my tent, so am bringing my laptop along to work on the train and if any juice left, in the tent if I am stuck there. I'm working on a new design "See no beta, hear no beta, speak no beta. Climb Onsight" which will have the three monkeys theme.

angry wrote: Does the originator get a discount? Yes, Angry. It's a little convoluted though. Choose the item(s) you want, and PM me here with the url(s) from the shop. I will send them to a separate page that has the discounted price and email you back with the url to locate them. Then you simply order as usual. In a case like this one, where others seem interested, you will get them at cost + $1.00 which is the least markup possible. The site automatically adds that on. Markups range between $2.50(stickers) and $16.00(tracksuits), with shirts around $7 - $9. So, a $25 shirt will be somewhere around $19. All the products have different costs, so it's quite variable. But you can see the bases yourself by looking at the cafepress site(not the climbaddict one) as if you were going to make your own items. Also - I still will add colored prints/shirts on the cowbell design - early next week. Now before everyone else comes running with ideas....I ain't going to be a free design agency! - I will reject anything I don't want to do, for reasons that may make no sense. My prerogative. - It's not all that hard to make your own stuff on cafepress, so...try it; you might like it. - I ain't really interested in doing freelance design for pay. $75 an hour and I am slow as molasses and have dial up which makes the whole thing take forever. Your simple design t-shirt will cost you $200. At least.

I was down in the Gunks about 12-13 years ago and saw a guy wearing a Black Diamond T-Shirt that said "Crack Climber" and had a climber jamming up a buttcrack. Always wanted them to make those again, I'd buy one for sure.

(just kidding) Wouldn't it make more sense for the design to have a couple slung Hexes hanging downward, however? (i.e., their orientation when they're clanging around on the n00bs' harnesses?) Sign me up for the cowbell shirt; I also vote for the hanging / clanging orientation.. maybe even show a couple of them hanging together? I don't know what you're talking about in the "selling 8 shirts to Gunks climbers" thing.... If you are referring to the photo someone else posted with he word "Gunks" and the person under it....that's not my design, for one thing. It's already available online. I think in a cafepress shop(just search Gunks). If people are interested in that design with different crag names...they should contact the shopkeeper who made that design if possible, and ask. I won't copy that idea. The cowbell design is as is. You don't like it, make your own. As I have said, I still need to add the colored print/shirts in. Maybe tonight....

I think they gave it a wee shot at one point, a wiggly guy- I think he still goes on their chalk bags... Just did a search. Their new chalk bags don't even get them. It seems I was mistaken- my Buddy definitly has one on his, though. A funky wee stick man made from sgwiggles.

I still have some color shirts to add to the "More Cowbell" group, but the guy's ones are done. They are here: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/5946448 I had a rather tasteless bit of inspiration this morning....Here's the rough sketch. The hangers/rings would be line drawings, not photos, and there would be bolts drawn on and the rings would be dropped to the end of the slots as they would be if on a wall. Should I add it in?(Not asking "Will you buy?" but more like "Is it too repulsive?) Also - I can't remember what the orientation is for anchor hangers....Is this correct? Also, going to add a "Don't Hate Me Because I'm a Gym Climber" text design.(And maybe add "boulderer," "old school" and "sport climber" options.

Just rotate the left one clockwise a 1/8 turn and put the ring toward the center, the right one gets a counter-clockwise turn.

"more boobs, less bolts" on the back, eh...? well.....I'll do a variation with and without. Cost is higher for the second side printing, but that isn't a problem really. The price is still reasonable. But my thinking was the design is a spin on nipple piercings, and I wasn't seeing just chicks. I was imagining a Mr. Clean genie man sort of guy....hahahah. I agree that the horizontal hanger, which was how it was shown in the sample I am referencing here: http://www.climbinganchors.com.au/...-single-captive-ring would look less attractive. I guess I must never have seen just the ring/hanger in real life. When I recall the ones I have seen they usually have the chains or just the hanger, and I remember them as being set at the angle. Oh well.... Pink femme style is definitely available. Once I get it put up I will post the link.

In my experience, nipple piercings did not work well with climbing. Got them caught on a rope or a squeeze chimney one time too many and decided the lil bastards had to come out. I miss them sometimes, but then I remember that I don't have to be careful removing my seatbelt anymore and it's not so bad.

You know, a feminist call to action! When I get mine, I'm going to go out of my way to say 'Excuse me pal, but are you staring at my chest?'

Oh well... The horizontal doesn't look near as good. And you certainly have seen them at an angle. For starters, there are hangers out there in just about any orientation, either because whoever set them didn't know what they were doing or just from wear and movement. However, and I admit to not being anywhere close to an expert on placing bolts, the ones on your T-shirt look pretty close to what I would think is correct. Far closer than horizontal certainly. The clipin point, i.e. where the draw is going to hang, should be directly below the bolt.

Yeah, that was the way they were shown when I snagged the reference pic.... I figured out a solution though... I'm going to make the ones on my shirts be buttonheads(more nipple-esque....) and if anyone says th hanger is wrong I'll just say...."they're spinners" It is going to be a bit before I get this design up. I could go with plain b/w line art but I want to try to make the illustration have gradations of grey color and shadow/highlights. This will be a stretch for my elementary Adobe Illustrator skills....we'll see what happens.

It just has to do with the cut of the hanger and single ring verses a double ring like this... If this only had one ring the rope would be running between the ring and the rock.

climbingtrash wrote: happiegrrrl wrote: ...This will be a stretch for my elementary Adobe Illustrator skills....we'll see what happens. Are you using Illustrator? I didn't think cafepress would accept vector images. Once the work is complete in Illustrator, one "Saves for the Web" which opens up the image in another window, with options to save as GIF, JPEG, PNG, etc., and a tool to detail the image size. Select PNG-24. and make sure the 'transparency' box is checked(the transparency allows the image to be printed on the dark colored shirts). For the size, go to the area marked "image size" and change it to be a set of numbers that will make the image size to be equal to or greater than 2000 X 2000 pixels. Must be at least 2000 X 2000 to get optimal print quality. You can do larger, especially for the ...I forget what they call the women's BIG size shirts... but for most products it makes no visible improvement to go larger. As not all designs are square, you need to adjust the height width accordingly. If the width is 2500 and the height is 1500, you can see it is going to "same as" 2000 X 2000. I do all my work in Illustrator. Even photo images(which I have very few of) I will do what is to be done in Photoshop and then move it to Illustrator for text and other work. I'm poorly skilled in Photoshop, to start, and even though I was taught Illustrator back in the early '90's and still using version 10, all my stuff comes out exactly as I envision it. When I started, I really just could not understand the CafePress "way" with those templates.... I have never used them. I draw in Illustrator using "actual" measurements, and then do the size adjust as I described above to get the right number of pixels. Works perfectly. The one thing to know is that, for the dark shirts, you need to keep something in mind. Because they first lay a layer of white on those shirts, IF your image has 'cutout' area where you would want the shirt color to show through, you need to set the file to "Show Transparency Grid" (under the "View" column). If you do not, then the cut away areas will be printed as white instead of being cut away in the print process to show your shirt color through. ....I always tell people CafePress is easy, and it IS. Once you get used to it.....It is murder in the very beginning for most people. The good news is that their forum people are incredibly patient and helpful. Even though they get asked the same questions over and over and over - MANY more times than a shoe thread - they answer as if it's the first time anyone's ever asked. You'd never see "Do a Search" or STFU, N00b" over there.....

...instead of sizing to massive amounts of pixels, why not just up the DPI to 300? that's default for AI and easily importable to PS. and if you know your dimensions to start out with, then just make a document of those exact sizes (in either PS or AI), set DPI to 300 (for print) and CMYK. then export as a PNG instead of "save for web" which will compress your document. then again, I've never used cafePress...just speaking from print experience. they may have a different system over there and they just might want 2k+ pixel documents...but my guess is a higher DPI will do the trick.

You may be right on the latest version; I just tested my version (AI 10) and it doesn't have PNG as an option on export. I DO make my designs in AI as exact size, but when I do the "save for web," the dimensions are smaller than a 2K x 2K. I do recall their explanation that this size WILL produce the correct DPI for their print process. So...that's what I do. You mention an item that should be noted for people using cafepress. That is that images need to be in RGB and not CMYK. Don't ask me what the deal is - I assumed it was something to do with the uploading process. The other thing is - my version offers PNG - 8 and PNG - 24. Must use the PNG - 24.

why in the world would they print with RGB? either their total noobs or they have some sort of "automated" process...GG technology. either way...build in AI export as PSD (keep layers writable) save as PNG -24 (if your AI doesn't have the option) but saving for web will hurt your compression. then again...I don't really care about how yall get your t-shirts so I guess it doesn't really matter :D I shop at express for men. oh yea and buy them 90$ prana pants. oh wait...wrong thread, thought we were still talking yuppies for a minute.

I am not 100% clear but I think the actual print does go through a conversion to CMYK and the RGB enables them to show the designs through the website - honestly...I am not sure. It is all written within their website, and I did go through it all when I started. But it's info I didn't need to retain so - didn't. Too lazy to go look it up and advise right now. CafePress does a pretty good job in printing. They have limitations that sometimes irritate shopkeepers. Like that the color white cannot be printed on light color shirts(if you have white in your design it will not be printed and the shirt will show through). Also the design can only be printed centered or as a smaller print on left upper corner. If you want the design lower than what it would default to, you have to incorporate invisible dots or something(which won't print) in the artwork to force it lower in placement. It's a print-on-demand deal and not actual screenprinting. I am not sure how it all works technically, but I have been very satisfied with the quality of the work. Of course, my designs are not really complicated and neither are the majority of cafepress things. But I am fairly certain that a person with good graphuc arts skills could produce quality sophisticated designs(with fading and overlapping colors and elements, for instance)

Happie - has anyone suggested to you making a stinky memorial shirt? It may be a sweet but corny way for us all to remember him by. And he had so many funny posts that could be used. Just a thought. It's certainly not the same around here without him, is it?

Wow. For somebody supposedly involved in the T-shirt industry... RGB, additive color space, used by light – like the light emitted from your monitor CMYK, subtractive color space, used by pigmented sources that absorb/reflect light – like your T-shirts. All printers need to convert to CMYK for printing, unless they’re doing some one-step iron-on; in which the computer just automatically does the transition. Many print shops will now have you send the image in RGB (along with the color profile) because they have better tools for getting what you see on your screen onto your T-shirt. It’s probably just easier than having dozens of people call up everyday asking what CMYK is, how they get their, and/or why doesn’t their image look the same anymore.

And he had so many funny posts that could be used. Just a thought. It's certainly not the same around here without him, is it? Sty certainly is missed. One can see it in every reference someone posts. He was as compulsive as the postliest among us and he was a good guy. He's an rc.er who will be memorialized for a long time to come. About a memorial shirt - I have to admit I am not sure how I would proceed with that. I didn't know him or interact with him closely enough to have an insight into his personality that I feel I could do his memory justice. If the community did a group brainstorm and came up with something I would be happy to realize the concept, with some caveats. I would set it up in a "stand-alone" shop separate from mine, and there would be no markup, except the unavoidable $1 that CP adds automatically. If someone who knew Sty well could say a charitable organization that he cared for, that money could be donated to that organization(Perhaps people would prefer to have a markup after all, knowing that would be the case. Hovever, I am a bit leary of doing that out of concern for the transparency aspect of the situation. May be better to simply name the organization and people could donate beyond that automatically added amount on their own. The problem: I am headed on a trip in a couple of days and would likely not be able to complete the project before I leave. If the design was a very simple design consisting mostly of text(example might be a rc.com facsimile quote of his with the little box around it), that I could probably get done in a few hours time. Still - to get a consensus from the rc'ers would take a bit if time. There are other people here who know cafepress and could get the project done, so that is an idea. If there is interest, maybe they will come forward and offer.

If I were "in the t-shirt industry" I would be working directly with screenprinters and selling my goods wholesale as well as retail through an online outlet. That's been suggested to me. I'm not into it for a variety of reasons. I don't know what people think ClimbAddict is, but I can tell you, a money-maker it's not. It's more like a hobby. I gave out more in donated goods last year than I brought in as income. Significantly more. And I am fine with that. If I include the labor involved in the thing, I would have to somehow come up with a design that sold thousands in order to recoup that investment. Perhaps I may expand to make ClimbAddict a section of a larger shop someday. Perhaps. I have other things I would like to do before that, though. As for the RGB/CMYK thing - As I mentioned, I read about that when I began the shop. That was about two years ago, I think. I didn't have any reason to retain the information at a level I could call it up at a spontaneous moment's notice. And so - especially since if I actually needed to have that information again, I know where it is - I wrote what I did. I've got things of higher priority going on right now than fact-checking a random rc.com post.

I made this design - it just won first place in a small contest at my local gym for a gym tee. The text says: "On the fifth day, God created the dyno." And oddly enough, a friend and I also came up with the whole "chalk is like heroin" and "'biners as nipple rings" ideas.

The beta version of the Boltits design is up. Here's the url: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/5970906 When I come back from my trip, I will see about redoing the design to give a more realistic effect on the hangers. I wasn't able to get anything I like in Illustrator, but this morning I remembered a trial version of a PS program that creates a chrome look. No time to find it and work on it at this time though.

From what I understand it is a Direct Print system where it actually dies the fibers of the shirt more then a normal screenprint. Most screenprints are more of a layer of ink on the shirt (yeah dud dude). I have a Cafepress shirt and have been very pleased with quality. It has held up well and retained the print, and it's actually a white image on a black shirt. Just my $.02 Peace

I updated the art on the "Boltits" design to have the metallic effect. Here's the photo: Link: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/5970906 By the way - thanks to the people who bought some of my designs after reading this thread. Appreciate it, and hope you are pleased with the shirts!

I started working on this one night and lost interest. If anyone makes this into a shirt, I'll buy it. Basically it's a Free Tibet shirt that's got a topo of El Cap where the tibetan stuff normally goes and it says Free El Cap. Here's my very rough draft.

Not an idea, but a comment. The absolutely best climbing shirt I ever saw was on a soccer mom at a youth soccer game. She had on an Everest 1996 Expedition T-shirt. I said, where did you get that? She said From my brother. I said, Who's your brother? Her answer...Ed Viesturs. OMG.

My friend found a shirt at goodwill that has a silouette of a guy on an overhang on the front (doesn't look cheesy like usual), and on the back it just says "keep rising".

Just finished the rough version of the "Free El Cap" shirt... It's definitely going to get better then this, though. Do people think it would be better without the dragon things, or with the dragon things holding el cap instead of the cup thing, or what

Ice climbers... how about something along the lines of "adventure - a dish best served cold" with a pic of an ice climber? Edit to add - or a super cheesy one "Because it's there" with a picture of a cool lookin' mountain?

I was also thinking of one taking the piss of those "Tap ouT" t shirts that said "Run ouT" I dunno if it'll work, though. I was also thinking of a "oh shit, sudda brought doubles in red" line. One with someone taking a whip with a thought box saying it, one with someone trying to place a super tipped out green saying it etc.

After the first sin, to stop man getting bored, god created the rock, a playground of sorts, for man. Over time man forgot of the rock's original purpose and found it morre entertaining to throw the rock at others. not very climbing related but a picture of a chasm like hell with the caption "Hell, the ultimate cave dive"

Angry, Apparently you didn't know that my first belay was 5.10 and I was 7 years old. Right now, I'm belaying onsight 5.14d and catching on 5.15... Plus, it seems that perhaps the most important thing that keeps people climbing is a good catch, otherwise, we'd all be wheeling around looking at stairs wondering, "How am I going to get through this next pitch..." I think the hat is funny and your sense of humor is... well, let's just say I wouldn't want to share pbr and stories around the campfire until the wee hours of the night while we wave our arms around like idiots talking about the whippers we took. All the while we don't even appreciate the guy that caught our fall, not as much as we should anyway. So, for all the belayers out there: Thanks, thanks a lot. I mean it.

If someone could make a spoof on "The Players" movie with a t-shirt that has similar design but a "The Belayers" theme, I would buy that shirt, for sure. My technical savvy was expended on learning how to type with the home row.

I concur. The above was the first page offerings of google images for "rope" and "alpine axe". I'm thinking non-kernmantel rope and a straight wooden axe, a la Conrad Kain.

If you have to have something, I'd use "Wild Rumpus" rather than "Wild Thing." The book is damn near universal, and the movie isn't far from release. The image and "Wild Thing" text would be redundant.

First attempt at making the axe look like part of the picture, the other one stood out too much. Does this suck even more or did I pull it off fairly well? Criticism please - I'm still learning this PS stuff.

Here's one. Over the left breast it has max and on the back, this: I could produce a few that had "SWHA" under the pic of max (or instead of it) if people were interested...

I could would buy one that said SWHA on the left breast and then the MTNRS Commandments on the back. You aren't going to just photo-copy that picture on the back are you? It would look much better I think if it was actually typed out so it could be read.

It would be better if it didn't have the 3 hole punch, and had a larger boarder. The writting right next to the edges in annoying. Also, the color of the paper would look good on a navy blue or black shirt. Might be fine on a white. But would clash with a number of other colors. All right, I've lost it, SWHA?

I took a couple of minutes to create a mockup, but I want to be perfectly clear: I have no intention of contributing to the productivity of this thread; I just want to add to the numerous breast references that must have already been made. note that it would be a better design if that was a cam in his hand and not some sort of creepy phallus

I think that gets me free tshirt. A Greg's leading that pitch gets him a free tshirt. And Jerimie ledding all the pitches but letting Magnus take the summit gets him a free shirt. And Angry gets one for not actually decking Magnus. Laz gets one for starting this thread. Did I leave anyone one out?

I remember. It was me, I took it while jugging , I was hiding under a wee overhang as you poured shit down onto me. Yea but it was me who quoted the "Jaws" movie line we're going to need a bigger boat. Greg LOSES his free shirt for not knowing how to top step right

The world's worst t-shirt shop is now open. I hatez trying to make cafepress/the internet work. http://splittip.cjb.net/ Yes, I know you're all surprised that I suck this bad at the internetz, seeing as I have read it all twice, but I still don't write good, including writing website stuff. The wild things thing should be up soon, and the whipper one is f*cking up on cafepress for the moment...

a friend just had a couple ideas: #1 a super-hot dominatrix in a black spandax shorts whipping some rc.com climbing nerd in full whillians harness with the rope saying "belay, bitch". #2 the other thought is less deined, art based on a "harsh mistress" type thing

I have had some new ones since last posting on this thread. My favorite is the "See No Beta/Hear No Beta/Speak No Beta/ Climb Onsight" one: The men's organic version is actually my "Item of the Week Or So" right now, available at the CafePress BasePrice(I am making zero markup) Link: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict.412837836 I also have some other new ones up, and probably the best selling one has been the "Bar Code Climber" one. Thanks for the complements guys. Yeah, cafepress is a bit pricey. I'm seriously considering having this design screen printed so I'll keep you updated if I do.

I haven't seen it discussed here but buried in some trip report on Supertopo I saw a tee shirt idea that I would pay for, if someone mocked it up and it was available in a color like a dark blue or green or tan... On the front it would just say: "5.8" On the back it would say: "In Britain they call it VERY SEVERE" What do you think?

i would love a shirt of a rack. not just on the front or anything, but if it were hanging across your chest on a gear sling. in the top left corner would be printed a strap that goes across your body. then at about mid chest there would be a bunch of nuts, cams, and carabiners that trails under your opposite arm and up the back to connect with the strap so it looks like you're wearing your rack whenever you wear the T shirt.

I just thought of one, "Yeah, I make my own gear." Of course I’d never make my own but RC.com should have them made for the cam comp competitors. Hint hint…

I'll swipe Edge's design and add a hanging toprope.... But I gotta charge a dollar more. (not really) Here are some of the new ones I added to the shop since the "See No Beta" design a few pages back. This one seems to be popular, probably the best selling one from the holiday season. Also I redid the graphics on this one: Not such a popular one.... but I like it, so don't really care.

But I'm curious...why does that design represent topping off on Cannon? You can go left, right, upways or sideways. Basically if you commit to a direction on the upper part of Cannon, then you will inevitably top out. You might piss blood and get a few pics like this: Kinda like watching "Seven." You know Gwynneth is going to bite it, but you still must watch.

The way they're orriented in your pic isn't right, but I think it would probobly look better than the correct orrientation. Agreed on that as well. I think you should also make a version for the older generation climbers. On the back? More Boobs, Less Bolts I know this is a bit late, but... should that read fewer bolts?

I have been adding a bunch of stuff to my shop this last few days, and will update as I have time. But here's one of the new designs: "Bouldering ~ The Path of Least Existence" I am also going to add this to a separate shop with "Parcour" instead of bouldering(trying to expand and actually maybe sell some goods....I mean Parcour is so EXTREME!!! And in the media, and all....). Anyway, this graphic comes in Black, Chocolate, Tan, Navy, Red or Light Gray on the a range of shirt colors and styles. The link to that section in my shop is: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7026409 There's a few other things going on too. - I run a promo called "Item of the Week Or So," in which I list one thing from the shop at the cafepress base price - no markup on my end. The base price is not as low as I wish it were, but this is out of my hands. At any rate, the "Item of the Week or So" gives people a chance to grab something at a lower price. - I also run some goods with no markup in a section called "ClimbAddict Promotional Items." These products are with a ClimbAddict logo of some sort. While I know some people would never - ever - be a walking billboard, Dingus' remark about the URL on Climbing Trash's design made me just - have - to mention this section.... - I have a couple of Valentine's Day designs, and the section is up top in the shop easy enough to find. "You Send Me" is one. "Candy Hearts"(with "Take" and "Gotcha" on the hearts) is another. And the "Nut Bouquet" is also nice for V-Day. I have had a creative surge over the weekend, and worked my butt off... Barely have scratched the surface on this motherload though. New crap being added daily and it looks like I have about 10 more design ideas to go.

So, I added another new design and someone has already bought an item with it on it. It's also getting a good amount of viewing traffic in the shop, despite it being fairly low on the overall page layout. I am not really happy with the design, and will be redoing it at some point, but don't really have any inspiration as to what to do yet. So, while it is in limbo, let me ask for critiques by anyone who might be interested in giving some feedback. Here's the design: The page in the shop showing it on items is here: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7024230 On the dark print colors(black, chocolate, navy) on light shirts, it is readable. But the light color print isn't really, I don't think. So, until I redo it, I can't add dark color shirts to the category. I usually do a pale pink, light blue, light tan and light grey, and these colors are just too subtle for the font to carry and be readable from any distance. I could keep the font, and add a background, I suppose, but I'm thinking maybe just choose a bolder typeface. Is the simple countdown list enough, or would you rather see a more artsy graphic, with maybe some sort of other elements involved besides just text? Also willing to take suggestions on other "top 10 things" (people say to climbers) since I am considering a redo from scratch. And on another note - this week I am going to be announcing a promotion that I'm running. It's actually already started, and can be found here: http://climbaddict.blogspot.com/

It's a really great idea and list. I would just simply change the font. Something bold and simple.

Couple I would add are... "do you rappel too?" "do you ever free climb?" "aren't you afraid of falling?" And I've had people yell up at me in while climbing in Zion..."DON'T FALL!" My reply...haha, yeah, thanks. Pffftt. Are you using photoshop to design with Happie?

I know that when I was first yelled up "Yer Gonna DIEEEEE!!!(I was on the 2nd pitch on Mike's Book in Joshua Tree, and some dudes driving down the road in a car were hanging out the windows, music blaring) I was in 7th Heaven.... hahahah I do my graphics in Illustrator. Once in a while I want o use an effect that is in PShop and I'll open the file in that program to work it. Like the Chrome Wings design, or the ones that have a photo image. But I am pretty poor with PShop. Not that I am so hot in Illustrator.... but most of my stuff is text and vector-based. To get the Illustrator file to PNG, you simply "Save for Web" and it offers the choice.

I really need to get that redone. Guess I better actually put it on my 'to do' list! At any rate, I have another new design. although this one isn't climbing specific. Oh yeah, I also made "Belayer With Benefits" - which I can see plenty of guys wearing(though maybe not on a chicks pink tee), but for a girl... maybe to torment the guys, I suppose. I still have so many designs to do, and have also expanded the "Bar Code Climber" design to include "bouldering" and "mountaineering." As well, I am rolling out that concept in a non-climbing shop, but that is going to be a little while before it's ready to let people see. edit: oh, and someone said upthread about "Yer gonna die" being an rc joke. I don't think that is originated on rc.com or even in rock climbing. Though I can't say for sure, I had the feeling it came from some pop culture reference, maybe a film or something, some time in the 90's or maybe even '80's.

Newest design - "Climbing On My Mind" We also redid the "Top Ten Things People Say To Climbers" with simpler font(though the old one is also still in the shop for a while, that one will be phased out in the next few weeks).

I use Adobe Illustrator to do almost everything. Occasionally I will export the artwork to Photoshop for an effect. Thanks for the compliment on my stiff. I wish I was more skilled with Photoshop. Trying to learn how to use Brushes and textures but for some reason I just can't seem to get it(maybe I should try a little harder....). I've actually started expanding to a general t-shirt line in the last couple weeks - Hoping to exchange my dog-care service income for something more portable. The website is outrageoustees.com, of anyone is interested(yes - I realize that was promotion above and beyond acceptable.) (comment in general) By the way - An interesting *quirk* appeared in one of my t-shirt shops a few weeks ago. Just after someone posted an image on this thread, and strangely related to that image. Nobody would know anything about that here - would they? (No, I'm not supplying details. Those who know, know what I am talking about).

The general comment was directed at someone else, and not you. Sorry for the confusion. The "See No Beta" design is my favorite too, and probably has been the best selling design so far. FYI - I have 2 sites with ClimbAddict stuff. The one in my signature link, and the one you just linked in your post. That one is on Zazzle - and the good thing about that place is you can get microfiber shirts. You just click on the design you like, and then choose the other types of shirt as an option. You can also personalize by adding your own words or images on that site. I am working on some designs where people can add their own photos - like in the "Quotations" section, I have Bridwell's "Best Vacation/Worst Nightmare" quote, and am making stuff where people can put their own photos. It's a little confusing, but once you get used to it, it's actually pretty nice.

Oh - that's you! (just got a notice of the sale - it said from "ZA" and I had to look up where that was. What does "ZA" stand for? "Zouth Africa," because South America already had the "SA?") Thanks for the order - I always love it when someone gets the Boltits. ewwwww....I just had an idea(that I don't think I can possibly, possibly manifest. CafePress recently added boyshort girls undies to their offerings, and the image goes on the rear. What just flashed into my mind(and now seems fixed) is a wire from a nut placement coming out of the.....slightly flaring?....crack, and some tacky saying(which has thankfully not entered my mind). The sad thing is that I know that when the phrase does come, I won't be able to not make the graphic. Like I said - ewwww.

Oh yeah....Saudi Arabia.....(Happiegrrrl still is embarrassed that no "S" outside her hemisphere occurred to her) But actually - Saudi Arabia only came into existence in 1932(I googled). When did South Africa? I also just realized that South America would not be an abbreviation used by the postal services, it not being a country and all.... But I CAN correctly identify the majority of the states in the US! Well, maybe except for those jumble of one to the west/southwest of.....about New Jersey(kidding)

I can also identify most of the states... All 78 of them. Including the Falklands and Metropolis.

Thanks for your reply. I can't understand you in General comment. Can you be more specific? I like your climb onsight shirt idea. Fun. http://www.zazzle.com/...g=196774712818835884 Very cool. How about a shirt that says "When in doubt, run it out!" Then a simple picture of a leader way above his last piece. I lack the software and talent to create this shirt.

I think it actually stands for "I am a sheep and follow the herd, because coming up with original humor is too risky; someone might not get it, and there could be an uncomfortable silence. The horror!" But, as happened with the bible(and Koran, and the Torah, and any other ancient work), the translation has been biffed along the way and is now completely unrelated to the original meaning. It took a good 1600 years for this to occur with the spiritual writings, but this is the age of the internet.... The above passage has morphed into being understood as "Page Turn For The Win" in a much shorter period. The gods of humor cry in their sleep, frightened for the future, concerned over the downfall of comedy.

Back on topic. Which is completely inappropriate and tacky sayings on Girl's boy shorts. The two bolts from Boltits, with the saying "Only a sport climber would bolt a perfectly fine crack." The two stoppers pic, with the saying "Trad climber, always trying to slot their nuts into cracks." Or something like that.

Thanks AB. Nice improvement. I need a no-beta shirt for bouldering at the gym. The unbridled enthusiasm of the gym rats for telling me how to do a problem is getting on my nerves. Maybe I'll put together an iron on version.

I know....Not only is it available clip art, but it's not even an original phrase.(Clip art and text are not copyrighted, so far as I can ascertain) - but the climber seems to be top-roping and leading at the same time.... You can use that as a comeback remark when someone makes a snide comment that you "drove to the crag in your gas hog..." Just point out the two ropes and say - "It's a party of three, and they car-pooled." Or something

That was the day I was sitting at work, dumbfounded, after looking down 5th Avenue and seeing the tops of the towers engulfed in flames and black smoke. Still very unsettling. - the tv newsreels don't even conjure the emotions, as I had just shown up as people had witnessed the 2nd plane making impact. I was dumbfounded not only for the obvious reason, but also because for several at my office they pretty much immediately returned to "work mode." "I have orders to write up" says one salesperson. Bizarre. Anyway - I'm up in New Paltz for the season - woohoo! Not much time to work on new designs, but I did squeak out this weak attempt. I know most will groan at the obviousness, been done a million times aspect. But you know what? The dumb designs are pretty much top sellers..... (Except for the "See No Beta" - my favorite one, which is the top selling design by far). http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7154271

Still working on getting the page up for this design, but mostly done. I have a couple of new ideas I am working on but it's just so difficult to find time, now that I have all the time in the world.... Living in the cabin has been spectacular already, and I'm only there 2 1/2 weeks so far. Going to have a house-warming party next month, already lost a pant size, have a (really) hot (and nice) guy hanging around.... All's I need now is to sell some t-shirts so I can afford to dump my dog-walking business come fall. Also - for those in the northeast - of you don't yet know, the Gunks Climber's Coalition will be having a big event this Saturday to raise funds for the management at Rosendale Water Works. I'll be donating some t-shirts for raffle prizes(not AB's Love to Auto-asphyxiate design though.....), and there is sure to be a lot of good stuff from other suppliers. The funds will be used to help Mohonk Preserve pay for the upkeep and management that will be involved in this new 175-acre parcel of land. Plus the rumor is that the MP is making some announcement at the event....maybe advising the opening date for access? http://gunksclimbers.org/events.shtml#PARTY

Here's the newest design, just added today: About the "Sport Climber Bolt a Crack" - I realized the layout wouldn't work, because for the boy briefs, the print area is 10 x 3. So there is no room to really do the graphic on it. Sorree As for the T/Rad - Since other places already have that design (as well as "trad is Rad") I don't feel right to put it in my stuff. There is another climber who has a CP shop who has taken 2 of the text designs from my shop(which were original on my part) and put them up in hers - It peeves me, and I wouldn't want to do that to somebody else.

But I guess the print area is even smaller. So no way to do that huh? Cause they would be really cool.

My friend has lent me her car for July, and so I am having a rush of "get it done" work, with the easy access to electrical outlets... Especially nice since it is over 90 degrees this last week or so, and stays too hot to climb until about 9pm. This one had rc.com as the inspiration. No stoop too low! http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7220851

Someone just found my ClimbAddict shop via a Google search of "Rock Out With Your Chalk Out." I just don't think I can sink that low. On a tangent, a friend(Cosmic Cragsman) of mine gave me an illustration he did, offering my use of it. Strangely, the above phrase would actually work. But I just don't think I can sink that low. Well, maybe I can. Anyone come up with a climbing-related phrase that would work well on this? If I choose yours, I will offer a "Light Color T-shirt" (this design or another of your choosing) from my shop in return.

Just added a "Happy New Gear" text design for holiday cards. Also new this year from CafePress is xmas stockings. Maybe Santa will fill them up with biners, cams, energy bars or a gift certificate form your favorite gear shop! http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7429788 I'm also working on a new design which will be a Camalot slightly cammed, and set within a circle so it gives the impression of a peace sign. Underneath, it will say "Piece."

Printing is done in the US. Perhaps the stocking blanks are imported, but unless you somehow know for a fact that the company employs sub-par labor practices, you're talking bullshit. I've put in an email to CPress asking for the country of origin, but have to guess they are domestic, since there's no indication of the items being imported. Not that something has to be made overseas to be of sweatshop labor.... Do you buy tomatoes, grown here in the good old US of A, from a supermarket? Or pretty much any type of produce? If you answer yes to that question - perhaps you should check out the conditions of the pickers in many of the commercial farms. No benefits, unsanitary living conditions and indentured labor is a fact in many of those places. American citizens, living in squalid conditions, being "sweated" as they subsist. Easy to point a finger, but remember there are 3 pointing back to yourself whenever you do so.

I get my tomatoes from local farmers, but that's because the ones at the supermarket have no flavor. My T-shirts I get from Laos, because they're cheap and I don't eat my T-shirts.

The piece symbol is pretty good IMO. Can you manipulate the cam lobes at all? I think if the tips of the cam lobes met at the stem of the cam it would look more like a peace sign.

Originally I had the design with the cam in the rest position, but felt the cammed way gave a closer proximity to the peace symbol. I actually tried as you suggested, but it would mean you are totally overcammed. I opted for a proper camming range and the suggestion of the peace symbol instead. Thanks for the critique though.

hahaha - you guys have given me some sort of inspiration - I don't know exactly what, but somehow involving those sorts of oversights and outright errors we often catch on climbing images and stuff that non-climbers make. But the overcammed Piece t-shirt will not be happening at this time.

Just remembered an old saying for pilots in training that might be modified again: "There are old climbers, and bold climbers, but no old bold climbers." That might not be a popular sentiment in this arena, however. Another thought, scrutable and agreeable to free solo climbers: Pro Tech Shun LL

Just an idea that came to mind the other day... added to the shop here: http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7643209 And, for something completely different.... I'm working on a new line of chalkbags. Yep - CafePress runs blanks...umm, no. These will be made by myself. Expected launch late spring 2011. The crux will be how I will do this, since I don't have electricity. But here is a picture of my first sample: It's not completely finished, and I know it is...a little delicate for real use. But this is my first prototype, and will be used for field testing the design as well as seeing just how long it takes to turn an offwhite bag to mud brown....kidding, sort of.

Thank you! I completed it today - here's the final pic: Tomorrow I will hopefully climb with it and see how it works. I have a discussion going on another site, getting input on what makes a good chalkbag. Will probably ask for input here as well. And, I bought some beautiful navy fake suede, navy/blue/white paisley chintz fabric, pretty embroidery tape, and....a couple yards of beaded fringe - Next samples are on the design board!

http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/7997856 I think I added some other new ones since last update, but here is the newest one. Also, though it's not climbing, I will be adding this one later on, hopefully in the next few days. The above is a picture of rock art that some people did at the Split Rock section of the Gunks. Two people spent hours choosing and placing the rocks that formed this piece sign, which was about 6 feet in diameter, and the way they fitted each stone together was really beautiful. Unfortunately it was all washed away when we had the big storm last week, but it did stay in place for several days beforehand.

Happie, Ive got a question for you. I have been looking for some t's lately and everytime I buy them they end up being shitty material that shrinks two sizes. I havent bought any from you yet but before I do, I'd like to hear from you and anyone else about the quality of the material. You have some pretty cool designs but Im getting gunshy about dropping money on internet t shirts... I like the old Hanes Beefy type material...not the new thin stretchy stuff...

Testpilot - I have personally seen some of the t-shirt styles, but not all. On Cafepress, they don't have any style that is that very thin material(which some people like, as I do myself, but can see how many people would like to have their T get thin by WEAR and not come that way!). - The Mens/Women's Dark T-s are a good medium weight material - 5.6 oz cotton. - The Light T's are also 5.6 oz cotton, but do seem to me to be just a wee bit thinner than the darker T's. Maybe this is due to the dyes used for darker colors. * - The Men's White T is the Hanes "tagless" 6.1 pz Cotton. (edited:This is the "Beefy T" from Hanes.) I need to put that T, and the Value T(which is pretty thin) back into the shop for some of the sections though. I had put those T-s in a special section as a price promotion, but not a soul EVER clicked on them, even though people specifically asked for the price ,breaks so.... now I need to move them all back. IF there is a design you would like to see in the Hanes white, just let me know, and I will put it on the top of the "To Do" list and move it back. Each of the clothing items does have a gauge showing the fabric thickness in the description, and you can also get an idea from that. Also - through CafePress, we have a 30 Day 100% Customer satisfaction policy. So, if you do make a purchase and find it doesn't meet your expectations, you can give CP a call(800 # listed on site under "Contact Us") and they will replace of refund. They tend to be very good with their CS, which is nice, and I always suggest to call if there is an issue, rather than do it via email.

Here is an idea I had for a bit. On Front: I'd rather whip on a dimpled alien On back: Black silhouette of a climber falling and a piece ripping. "Ur gonna die!"

I have made that text up for you using CafePress's design and Print tool. You can see the version here: http://www.cafepress.com/...aign=CreateAndBuyPDP If you want to try yourself, they make it fairly easy to do simple text stuff with a decent option in fonts. The print color choices are limited, but unless you are particular, you should be satisfied with the offerings.

Probably not too original - "Top Rope belay certified at 1 gym" Sign showing a number, say 69, words "whippers without incident", 69 is crossed out, number 1 is written next to it.

This is a new design in the shop just yesterday. The idea came from a Twitter discussion... I had seen a video someone had posted, about climbing a desert tower and the BASE jumping(this is the video) http://www.youtube.com/...dZ8w&app=desktop So, the Twitter guy and I are discussing, and he mentioned being sore from taking a few whips the day before. I said something like what became the graphic, and immediately thought "oooh...this would make a good t-shirt/sticker!" And as I thought about it, I also recalled Ammon's little BASE mishap, which can be read about here: http://www.supertopo.com/...258496/Ammon-McNeely and the words took on a little deeper meaning. Not that I ever want to be thinking"Oh good, it hurts. That probably means I'm not dead." But.... well, as another graphic I did, still my favorite, goes.... It's all fun and games until somebody craters! Pain Is graphic section of shop is found at http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/10894605

[URL=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/happiegrrrl/media/d78b95df-8ba8-486d-8e34-9584c0cbe9fd.png.html] At http://www.cafepress.com/climbaddict/11777811 It seems that half the action on this website is the people who are spending their energy giving one star to posts(as the last images I posted received). It would make me sad to know that was the level of my behavior, but I guess I can turn it around and remind myself to be grateful I'm not such an unhappy person that I have to act out by trying to put others down. Anyway - one star away. Hope it helps you feel better about yourself!

Anyway - one star away. Hope it helps you feel better about yourself! Maybe they 1-star you since it clearly gets to you and is amusing? Or maybe they are taking out their frustration on you for a site that used to be vibrant but now "half of the action" is you hawking your t-shirt shop? Could also be a mix of actual feedback in there too. I 1-starred a number of your designs that I disliked*. I gave higher grades to some that I thought were better. On the above, for example, all the frills on the text make it barely legible. And the border... looks like something from early 90s desktop publishing suites. I see you had a better rating on your climbing bum undies at least, which I think is better than most of the shirts. * Well, the site frustration played a part too. And to be fair I don't think just yours are bad - skimming this thread though there isn't anything I'd ever buy. They are basically mildly amusing jokes I would never need to own in clothing format.

My bad - I misunderstood the target market of people looking to display quotes on their shirts that they don't want others to be able to read. Based on what I've learned, I think this should be a winner: I think it will be a hit with posters who have racked up a single star post or two of their own but isn't for the IBS-afflicted.

It is not a big niche market, and selling via cafepress makes the items expensive, which is a hindrance for a lot of people. I have not had a single item returned in 2014 so far, and have an extremely low rate of returns in comparison to what others on the site who use the discussion forums seem to. I would say less that 10 items since I started in 2005. As for the "underestimated market" remark - Yes, apparently you have underestimated the market. I have other designs aren't plain fonts, and they do fine. You've certainly a right to your opinion, and I don't think all my designs are the most wonderful thing on earth, but I do have enough years working in the fashion and graphics industry to have confidence in my own work. Especially since the out of pocket expense on my end is fairly small. A few hours time, for the most part.
