When my cat sneaks onto my lap and I dont notice she is there until later. Stopping while driving/riding through death valley around sunset and listening to nothing. How the week before and after a doing a wall I can eat tiny candy bars like popcorn and not feel bad. The look on my mother's face when I refer to her cat (named Mr. Kitty) as Mr. Sh*tty instead. Waking up on my ledge in the middle of the night and looking up at the stars, then watching them fade while a full moon rises. How I think I have all of these huge dreams that will never come true, but then they do. -Kate.

A week ago I posted here that there was a mouse in my house, and was inquiring about humane ways to trap/release..... Last night, I woke up to a sound which was clearly that of a mouse scurrying around inside something. I went to go check and there (s)he was - not in the set trap, but (s)he had gotten into a plastic bag that was hanging on a doorknob. It was a transluscent bag, so I could see the little one (not so little, actually), and all I had to do was put a little crimp in the top, walk over to the window and release the mouse onto the fire escape, where she or he quietly crawled out and away into the moonlight. I think the mouse was happy about it; so was I.

Last night while driving home from work, I see this lone woman walking towards me on the sidewalk, I'm in my car. She is shaded by the trees and I can make out by her form that her left arm is bent upward at the elbow and pressed to her ear. As I get closer I can telll that she is a black woman who must have been wearing dark clothing, because all I could see was this very joyfull, intense smile and this woman's silhouette. It made me smile.

Things that touch me so deeply I cry Such as (both camp stories): #1 - The time I was walking one of our dialysis campers down to get her treatment and she was talking about her wishes in life. Background This is my recollection of dialysis patients from years ago. Please forgive the errors.... For those who don't know, dialysis patients do not have functioning kidneys. There are many levels of severity which dictates their treatment. Some have to get fluid injections and some are severe enough that they have to get hooked up to a machine with a needle in each arm. One drains the blood from their bodies and fliters it through the machine to clean it (our functioning kidneys do this normally) which then siphons back into the other arm and back into their bodies. This is very tiring for the child and keeps them confined to areas that have a dialysis machine close by. This treatment continues on until they can find a donor for a kidney. After the transplant (if they make it that long), they wait to see if their body rejects or accepts the kidney. If they reject, it's back to square one. At the camp where I worked, we had a dialysis center on site, so these kids could come to camp just like other kids, and sleep in cabins with everyone else. If you had a dialysis camper, one of the cabin couselors would take the camper to the dialysis center anywhere from a few times a week, to a few times a day, depending on their severity. Back to the story..... So I asked my camper what she wished she could do more than anything in the world. She said, "Touch a horse" and her eyes lit up. Tears immediately welled up in mine (and still do every time I tell this story). You see, we had a horse barn at the camp which was within sight distance to where we were standing. Literally a 2-minute walk. I took her for her treatment and then marched her directly down to the horse barn. She squealed and asked "Will I get to touch a horse?". I told her we were going to do better than that. We got to the barn and I grabbed a horse hand and explained the situation. He brought out a horse for her to pet. She was completely speechless (wouldn't it be great if we all could derive that kind of joy from the simplest of pleasures??). I asked her if she would like to ride him. Again, her eyes lit up and she nodded her head furiously. We carefully helped her on and then led her around the arena. After we got her down we walked up to the dining hall. She didn't say much for the rest of the day, but just wore an ear-to-ear grin. That evening during devotion (a quiet time before bed), she wrote a letter to her mother and then had me read it. It started off with, "Hi Mom, Today was the best day of my life." and then continued on with her story. I thought to myself, "Mine too."

I found one of my couselor friends, Brian, just outside the entrance area of the dining hall. I asked him if he was OK and he looked up at me. He had been crying and when I sat down to talk to him, he said he had just witnessed one of the most beautiful things he had ever seen and then relayed this story: #2 - We had one very sick boy, a dialysis camper, who had been coming to the camp for years. We'll call him Jake. Jake was now 14, although he looked about 8 due to his sickness stunting his growth. His parents told us that it was the highlight of his year and he lived for these few weeks. He had been a camper of Brian's for the past few years and he knew of him for years prior to that. When Jake left the following year, Brian knew that he would have his third kidney transplant this year in one last attempt to save his life. His body had rejected the first two and after 3, they can no longer offer a kidney to a body that will reject it. They must offer it to one of the many others waiting for one. Apparently Brian found out a week before the campers arrived that Jake had just rejected his third kidney transplant and he was very sick. This would be his last year. He still would be coming to camp this year, albeit late, as his parents wanted him to go to the camp that he loved so much before he died. This gave Brian a chance to talk to the rest of his campers about what happened and answer any questions they might have. He also asked them to help him make Jake's last year his best. Jake arrived a few days before I found Brian outside. He said that they had gone to the ropes course just before lunch to do Jacob's Ladder. This is an excercise where two ropes are hanging down from a high tree. Between the two ropes are wooden rungs, like a ladder. As they go up, the wooden rungs get farther apart, making it more difficult to ascend. Campers are strapped into a harness and belayed as they attempt to make it to the top. This takes a lot of physical energy and few campers have made it all the way up. Jake had many tubes attached to his abdomen and a regular harness could pull on the tubes and injure him. Brian arranged for a full body harness for Jake so that he could try Jacob's Ladder. One of the more athletic campers (one of the ones that made it to the top) whom everyone called "Chapman" had just come down from his turn on the Ladder. At this point, a dialysis nurse caught up with them and absolutely forbid Jake to do the course. She was not keen on activites that drained the little energy Jake had. It was all that was keeping him alive. Brian argued with the nurse over this, but Jake said that is was alright, with thinly veiled disappointment in his face. Brian agreed and promised to make it up to him. The nurse left. At that point, Chapman came forward and said, "Screw that. Strap him to me. He's going up." Brian said that it was a kind gesture, but there was no way he could make it up with someone strapped to his back. Chapman was adamant. He said, "Don't worry about it. I'll get up there." With that, Brian rigged the webbing and securely fastened Jake to the back of Chapman. Chapman then climbed Jacob's Ladder to the top with Jake in tow to the cheers of the rest of the cabin. By now, I was crying along with Brian, touched by the beauty of kids and their human spirit.

I like walking to work in the morning. I like the way the sun shines through the trees and watching the pigeon colony and the geese and ducks. Sometimes it makes me teary eyed it's so pretty. I also really like the way my horse's muzzle feels. There is a special pleasure associated with finding jeans that actually fit. The other night I got to rappel down off an overhang in the pitch black seeing only the lit up chateau across the lake. That was cool.

In reply to: In reply to: Peeing in a wetsuit still tops the list esp. when its cold cold cold water. coylec Oh boy oh boy that is cherishable. When you think you just can't hold out much longer, a tiny squirt of pee circulating around the small unit of space near to your skin, not only warms you and gives you an hours more worth of energy, but also puts a smile on your face. It's like your own personal fire place. Although, don't you think it sometimes feels like it's burning your skin? I'm not talking about the urinary tract infection.

your gf falling asleep next to you chocolate while you are working/reading, and your cat sleeping in the same room, you get up and go to another room, and your cat wakes up and follows you, and finds another place to sleep in the same room. watching your cat dreaming and moving its paws slow rain, which does not soak you, just wet your hair a bit watching sea, ocean, river, lake, anything filled with water buying a book and turning pages for the first time at home getting your slides from processing or hanging wet negatives and looking them at light for the first time reaching the last third of a book, and need to stop there since you have a meeting tomorrow morning, yet you could not stop, because it is excellent and keep going through the night

Taking a dump after baking it for hours, ahhh, bliss. That or peeing in a swimming pool. Have you ever seen the look of relief that overcomes a kids face when the little so and so pees in yer pool. They get this real concentrating look on their face and then after the deed is done the look of relief is priceless.

re-living good times anticipation of good times gear (is it healthy to love your tent?) smiles knowing that the best is yet to come

Cold Fat Tire in a frozen pint glass. after climbing. topping out on a Valley multipitch. Topping out on any climb. With a nice view. Looking across a canyon with a friend and planning a ton of FA's next summer when we have time to camp for a couple weeks there in the high country wilderness. Lazy, sleepy days.

Winning the 100-meters or the 200-meters when I'm the only white boy in the race. Driving my car how she was meant to be driven- absurdly fast. Talking with climbing buddies after the descent about how awesome the day was. Over beers. In the Valley.

In reply to: Hearing 311's "Love Song" on the radio when in the car with her. The original is WAY better. 311 can blow me. Rob

Rob One could say the same of The Cure, if one were so inclined. One can also make explosives out of readily available household chemicals, if one were so inclined.

Ya know, on second thought, I really don't wanna take this thread off topic. I kinda like it. The Cure is one of those little things that makes me happy. 311 doesn't do it for me personally, but if it works for you, great. Rob
