She's a great climber... Just not too humble, but much of that is her age.

what a terrible article. it seemed like it was more about bashing climbers and our sport than tori allen or her skill as a climber. pretty weak. and yes i sent them an email to let them know.

While I agree with the article that Tori bashing is a bit lame, the opening 'description' of climbers seeming way off the mark for me and the people I climb with. Does the author know anything about climbing?
In reply to: Serious rock-climbing is largely an individual sport. There are no cheering crowds, teammates, refs or coaches. The battles are solitary—you versus the mountain, the elements, God, yourself. It's not a sport for team players and making nice; it's for kicking ass and tearing up the side of a sheer piece of rock as adrenaline boils in your blood. No teammates? What is a belayer? In how many sports can you kill your teammates if you aren't constantly focused on their safety? The way I climb at least, 'making nice' is a major concern as you need to be able to trust your partner 100%. Is it just me, or is this more of the mythic X-treme adrenaline-rush climber dude that non-climbers imagine populate the sport?
In reply to: One of its mantras: The only thing the sport of climbing needs is fewer climbers Well maybe they do know something about the sport :)

In reply to: Fragmented and somewhat antisocial, the community is hostile to outsiders, and that hostility has only increased as the sport has gained popularity. One of its mantras: The only thing the sport of climbing needs is fewer climbers. What, like that's not true?

Sure there must be some people that think that the sport needs to be less crowded maybe because its a sport that involves personal challenge, BUT, because of this same reason, I think that the majority of us really dont care if there are more people or less in the sport as long as they are doing what they like and giving 100% to be better at it. NE way.... I think this article gives a bad impression about climbers and a bad impression about tori.... My opinion... Tori is a very cute, very gifted, excellent climber who doesnt want to think of herself as better than others, and is living her teen years like everyone else her age is. Did I mention she's a very gifted, excellent climber???? TORI RULES!!!! JC

I don't think the community is hostile to newcomers, just individuals. I love newbies ... they make my climbing look so much better  . Write them letters telling them that they're wrong. Worst case is you'll be ignored (we're all used that ... being that most of my posts haven't been read). Best case, they write a TRUE story about the climbign community that we can criticize. coylec

One of its mantras: The only thing the sport of climbing needs is fewer climbers. What, like that's not true? If you think that’s true then you should view your climbing community as separet to mine. I have known little climbing outside Yosemite, and the vibe is never short of positive. I have also been to J-tree, Red Rocks, and New Jack; and have never found this. I treat non-climbers no different then climbers, and the climbers I surround myself with are the same. As for climbing being a solitary sport, that couldn't be farthest from the truth. This author goes to some indoor COMP and thinks that is the climbing Community. How solitary is it to put your life in your belayers hands, to be spotted on a high-ball problem, or to hear shouts of encouragement through the crux of your project? No No No... I do not know this climbing community by which this bogus author speaks.

In reply to: "when you don't drink, smoke, swear, party...." And she calls herself a climber???    haha that was what I am thinking. The sad thing is nowadays even if I did not like her, it could not be because she has a bad personality it has to be because she is a good climber or pole vaulter?!?!? Can we ever dislike someone just because they are not likable?

In reply to: ...If you think that’s true then you should view your climbing community as separet to mine. Oh yeah! Come to Phoenix -- you can't set foot on rock until I get to kick you in the balls. And then Hillary gets to heckle you from above with her sneering grin and broken camera. (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

Completely lame and way too generalized. Sheesh. Not written by a real climber, I'd say. Saying I climb to fight with God? Sheesh again. :?

... haven't recognized that climbers are such dirtbags... But there's a good advice in it: Let's get rid of the teammates and sooner or later the crags won't be crowded any more. Just let the rain wash away the blood. (sigh) - Daniel

i vaguely knew who tori allen was before this. i knew she was rediculously good, young, cute and had the little monkey thing but i had never seen her bashed on a website before as the article suggests. for heaven sakes, shes 15 years old, i don't see why people are trying to tear her a new @$$ hole. i don't she is flaunting it or anything. maybe she does need to grow up a bit but who doesn't at 15. the only thing that i don't understand about her is the whole action figure thing, that does push things a bit, but is that just her parents cashing in? don't know. oh yeah, and the other thing about the article is how they talk about people driving for hours to get to "competetions". i would say the majority of climbers, including many "hardcore" ones, don't climb at comps that often. i know there are a group that do and that Tori belongs to that group, but the best climbers that i know (except the kids at the gym) don't climb to climb at comps.
