The first time I heard someone (usually a trad only person) bash someone for bouldering or sport climbing! what about us who do all three and do them well?

Reading all the bullshit on this site. I tried not to respond, but everytime I come on this site I see one or two threads that get me boiling. Climbers that are 15 years old spewing bullshit about how hard they climb and what people are wearing at the gym, but who probably can't climb a 5.3 trad route at the Gunks. Climbers asking if that's the way they used to do things when refering to a hip belay. Come on man it's part of the history of the sport.

I don't care if you boulder, climb ice, trad or alpine, come in out of the dark learn a little about the sport. John Long looks at the sport in totality from bouldering to ultimatre game of mountaineering.

Some of you need to focus on climbing and not focus on what or how others do things, unless it comes to a safety issue.

I'd like to see how many of you are still around five years from now.

Realizing that climbing hurts my wrist. Also not knowing anyone but my two partners that climb, and not being able to find anyone else.

My biggest dissapointment is that the big cliff (1000 feet high) overlooking my town is choss. And to make things worse there is ice that forms on it but is usually poor due to warm conditions.

You rock Kalcario - not because I necessarily agree with your opinion (though honestly I've never thought of it that way before, so I wouldn't say that I disagree either) - but because you present a controversial stand and have the ability AND the balls to defend it. Kudos to you.

Big disappointment for me - moving to Indiana with the intent of meeting new climbers and road tripping to the Red River Gorge every weekend, only to find that people who call themselves climbers here in Indiana are really lame and it's damn near impossible to find people willing to take off for a weekend.

But my BIGGEST disappointment, was last August (2001) when I got laid off from my job with 3 months severance, and started planning a massive road trip, but then tore my ACL (knee ligament) a week later playing ultimate frisbee before I had a chance to climbing ANYTHING.

Damn, that pissed me off. I'm still pissed about it now, and will probably continue to be pissed off about it until the day I die. (and likely for all eternity after that)

Mountain biking and bushwhacking about 10 miles over a day and a half (it was slow going) to get to a set of mostly undeveloped cliffs only to realize we don't have enough water, and so have to leave after one short climb!

Of course it couldn't rain all summer, could it?

Ahh well, I'll be back... the trip still rocked.

Rock on!

Kalcario... some questions:

Do bolderers actually stand on top of the things they don't climb up ?

If they aren't climbing those things, how do they stand on top of those things ?

Do sportclimbers stand on top of things ?

The fact is that you just don't like boldering and probably, bolderers. So you try to belittle their experience.

Ahhh... California.

Biggest dissappointment was when I had to come back to school in South Central Minnesota. After climbing all summer in the Black Hills, this just sucks.

I'm most disappointed about letting another season go by without climbing the Vampire at Tahquitz.

It has been high on my tick list for a couple of years, and I keep finding excuses to put it off. Putting off climbs for whatever reason burns me more than failing at any climb that I've tried.

My biggest disappointment is probably the fact that I can't climb more often than I do.

Boldering isn't climbing?

OMFG.

Boldering is CLIMBING BOLDERS.

I don't have any desire to aid climb, and don't even particularly like the idea, but it's still aid CLIMBING.

Climbing is climbing is climbing. The fact that you don't like a certain aspect of it doens't make it any less of climbing.

Kalcario:

You failed to answer my questions.

How do bolderers get on top of the things they get on top of ?

Yeah, I think you dislike bolderers and boldering. You have ranted anough about it in this thread to make me think that. The fact that you don't even consider the questions I pose as worth being answered also says something. I don't know what you expect of me, by asking me if that's all I got... but I am not here to just attack you for your views. I'd like to figure out what you think and why you think that and help you understand someone else's perspective...

Obviously, you are just looking for a fight.

Yea, California !

It's semantics. Say you run into an old climbing partner, someone you used to rope up with, and they ask you "have you been climbing much?" If you say yes, they're going to assume you still rope up. The proper response from you would be "no, I'm just a pebble wrestler now."

Yes I realize you have to climb to get to the top of the pebble. But stair climbing is a form of climbing also. To call yourself a surfer you have to not only paddle out there on your board but actually stand up on it and ride the wave. Screwing around in the breakers on your boogie board is'nt surfing. Actually the surfing equivalent of bouldering would be skimboarding, where your shorts don't even get wet as you hydroplane across 1/2 inch of water on a piece of plywood while getting clowned on by both the girls on the beach and the real surfers on the waves. Actually your shorts probably do get wet when your crash pad and spotters are more than 6 inches away...

The ruination of climbing is at hand! Boulderers repent! Renounce your crash pads and return to the true path of climbing righteousness! Can I get an Amen?

You make poor analogies.

In fact, surfing, bodySURFING and boogieboarding all fall under a larger category of "surf-riding." Sure, if you are a surfer who identifies the term "surf" with what YOU do, you are going to look down on other forms of surf-riding. Just like you look down from the "lofty heights" of your discipline at other forms of climbing.

Boldering is more like downhill mountainbiking. It is definitely not as well rounded as other facets of the sport, but it uses the same equipment, just slightly tweeked for the specialized operation. It takes a higher degree of physical prowess and requires a different sort of focus. The downhill mountain biker is often looked down upon by his fellow mountain bikers and told that he has no endurance and that what he does isn't "REAL" mountain biking...

And if he let's such tripe get to him, then he's just as bad as the people who would write off a whole other discipline because they don't like it or it's practitioners.

You are entitled to your opinion, as self-righteous and disrespectful as it might be...

And I will let you know something, from a bolderers perspective. Part of why I gave up climbing on a rope was because I was tired of dealing with people who feel somehow justified in totally negating another person's discipline of this sport for some reason. Whether it be a sportie telling me I didn't REALLY send cuz the draws were already up or a traddie telling me I didn't REALLY send cuz it was only a pebble, I feel sorry for those who need to invalidate the happiness of others in the pursuit of their own happiness.

I pity you and your ilk, but not because of what kind of climbing you do or do not enjoy.

Wander over to the "Insulting newbies" thread for more kicks, folks, it's not a good day to be headcrak...
