So, driving to work this morning, listening to NPR, and all of a sudden i hear, "this, and other NPR stations are supported by... (you know the usual announcement) Vermont Teddy Bear Company, offering 50 Shades of Grey teddy bear, in time for Valentines day, complete with accessories..."

So, I googled it. It's a teddy bear dressed in suit, with handcuffs in one paw and a blindfold in the other...

Seriously? I mean, what the f@cking f#ck?

As much as I hate to say it, Fifty Shades of Grey may be a major contribution to a sexual revolution in the US.

But, probably also to some abuse-called-bondage in the hands of incompetents who don't have a fucking clue what consent means.

Knot to mention (spoken from the full authority of someone who's not read the book and has no intention to do so, or see the movie), from what I heard on the Savage Lovecast a few weeks ago, the 50 Shades story ends with him realizing that [princess bride]Twoo Wuuuv[/princess bride] can conquer all his oh-so-terrible kinks, and he gives them up in the end. Is that how the story plays out? If so, it's a little lame.

It is, after all, socially acceptable porn for bourgeois white people.

I wonder where this is coming from, because I have heard it from other people, too, and then they admitted that they heard it from someone, but they didn't read it. I would have thought that at least on Savage Love they would have gotten the facts straight.

I admit, I have read the books (I also admit, I have been known to read bodice-ripper trashy romance novels). It is sort of like junk food for brain... you enjoy eating it, and then feel sick afterwards. But anyway, stupid sugary romance and gaggingly-pathetic writing aside, the way I read the ending is WAY different than love fixing Christian.

The last scene in the book is, if I recall, the princess bride, I mean wife, pregnant with the second child, hanging in some chains and enjoying being whipped. And the narrative is along the lines of, they have found a balance. She enjoys being tied up, and he no longer feels that his childhood is the reason why he is into BDSM.
He came to peace with what he is, he occasionally enjoys non-BDSM sex, too, and the only part that was "fixed" is that he is now O.K. with her touching him, where in the beginning of the series he couldn't stand being touched (supposedly because he was abused, beaten, and burned with cigarette butts as a kid).

Maybe I am the one that's off in my memory, bu I don't particularly want to go back and re-read it.

And I am kinda on the fence about whether I want to see the movie, or not. It would be stupidly bad, I know. the question is, would it be bad enough to be funny though...

And I kinda agree with Doc, I have said it before, it is an important book culturally, and it is sad that is is a crap book in every way, but it is, IMO, the book that brought BDSM into mainstream. I am not talking about stuff like Story of O, or other similar stories... There were others, and better ones, as far as stories go, too... BUT, this is the first time BDSM was put into a trashy romance novels, the first time that it was incorporated into a LOVE story, as opposed to a heavy, tragic story, KWIM? And in that sense, it is ground-breaking.

And a weak-end update: lots and lots and LOTS of dancing.

2x2hr workshops on Saturday (and in between Ed and I rushed to the gym to do a hangboard session, because, schedules!!!!), followed by 3 hours of dancing.

3x1hr workshops on Sunday. Followed by more dancing.

I'm whopped. And slightly more capable of incorporating jazz steps into my lindy hop, and doing the solo embellishment things.

But I was skipping, and hopping, and otherwise using my gimp leg, with no ill effects. WOO?

I just managed to wade through the books recently (note - first book kinda hot, but after that things went down hill fast). Your summary of the end sounds about right.

The "romance" part of the book made me throw up in my mouth a little. I have no problem with the idea of having some BDSM in the bedroom, but the female lead became weaker and weaker through the books until a story tale "perfection" where getting married and having babies was the ultimate achievement. Bleh.

Weekend update:

Made semis again, and probably climbed my best the entire time in semis in France. Partially that I've been figuring things out about comp climbing and improving, partially because it was a lot more techy than burly (I can stay on holds better than I can pull off them).

Still pumped out fairly early and fell off, but I got 17th place overall.

Flew home yeaterday. Figure I was awake for ~23.5 hours, not counting the poor few hours of rest on the plane. Woke up at 4am this morning. Whoo-hoo jet lag!

Back at work slogging away. It's been a rough day so far.

Wekeness update:

Was supposed to go climb a big ice route in the Beartooths. Too Warm.
Was supposed to go to Devil's tower. Too high of a chance of rain.
Was supposed to go to zzzz^x. Again, rain.

Instead, got a bit shnockered on friday night with people from the department, graded with a hangover on saturday, and then went for a super fun ski tour yesterday. All of the ice is turning into sloppy styrofoam.

It's been a rough day so far.

we still need to know why chossy was livid.

I put up a lengthy post is grupe.

Walking to work this morning, looking at the frozen footprints in the ice, I noticed that I am DEFINITELY not the only person wearing crampons over my shoes.

I was really happy to have them, too. Sigh... I wish this winter would end already!

Kind of a shock to the system coming back from Europe and taking half an hour to clean off my car and dig myself out.

No schit. It has snowed essentially every day since I've arrived in NYC. We're having some great ski days and ice climbing, but I'm missing those occasional days of crisp sun at the NRG. Am getting stronger in the gyms here, though. It will pay off.
