That's what I was thinking, fshizzle. Perhaps he should strap his helmet to his ass cheek?

Of course, when people talk out of their asses as much as they do around here, that leads me to think many people's brains are in between the cheeks, all backwards stylee like the Volkswagon Bug, so perhaps wearing a helmet on your rump IS a good idea. Brain bucket no matter where you put it.

I wonder if he's gonna tell me to nail my labia to a burning building now! :tinfoilhat:

It was detected by an NSA satellite looking for wreckage from a downed spy plane. Fortunately, when the satellite image analyst saw that it was a BD neutrino draw he was able to correlate his findings with the NSAs intercept of your posts on this site, and rule out that it was from the spy plane. Unfortunately, the location of the draw is now a national secret.

Jay, you're right. The draw was only about 2 years old and has seen very, very little use. It has not been left to hang on a route at all.

To all of you joking about wearing a helmet on my ass: I'm seriously happy that you've found humor in it. However, despite falling on my ass, my head stopped only inches from a rock which could have caused very serious head injuries. It is not amusing to me.

There are a now a small handful of people who remain incredulous to my story. I'll make sure to get you some good pictures of the bolt and adjacent edge to show you what happened. You can disbelieve all you want; it is no skin off my teeth. The purpose of this thread is to get you thinking about hazards you may have neglected in the past. I never considered the possibility of a QD failing in this way before. You can go on doing the same thing. Just make sure you wear a helmet on your ass.

jbell2355, you've been around long enough to know that you should blow off lame comments like those of lostdog. He's obviously lame 'cause if he had done it right, he'd still be nailed to that burning building. You've done a service to climbers. lostdog has not. Unless of course, he goes back and bolts his dick to the burning building.

Oh great, now it's a bolting thread.

Would this be considered retro-bolting?

Do we need the first ascensionist's permission to bolt a previous trad climb?

Will this be a quarter-inch or three-eights inch bolt?

How about a drilled angle?

Will this be bolted on lead, or on rappell, or on lead with aid?

Power-drilled or hand-drilled?

And so on...and so on...and so on...

In the Ruckman Cave at Rifle, there is a route called pinchfest, the fourth bolt (before the crux) has a tiny little limestone spur about 2.5 inches below it, perfectly placed to abrade the draw. People often use Pinchfest as a summertime fitness/warm down route in the afternoons, so the draws tend to stay up for months at a time. I was belaying a friend on it one afternoon, he took several whippers off of the crux onto the 4rth bolt, but eventually went to the top and lowered down without anything untoward happening. The next guy however, went for it on the onsight, and skipped the 5 (20 foot whipper) he botched the sequence, fell, broke the draw (only about 2 millimeters of nylon was left) and ended up about a foot off of the ground. Pretty close call.

In reply to:
Wow. I think that is the first time I've heard of the webbing on a draw failing. How old was the draw? Has it been "abused," such as left hanging on a project for a while with no gumbies around to steal it? Is it possible that a different length draw on that bolt would avoid the problem?

Almost everyone skips the last bolt, at least until they're on the jugs and clipping at their ankle, if not entirely. I did that route last fall and whipped 4 or 5 times before I got the sequence right and RP'd it, but didn't notice anything bad happening to my draw from that short amount of service. It's a nice winger though when you do blow that move, and it would be scary as hell to to fall onto the third bolt, it's a big fall on a short route already...

I recently came accross a similar story in a European forum, quickdraw looked like this:
http://images.belclimb.net/news/beez-200409.jpg
Unfortunately this had a tragic ending: some idiot had set up a toprope with a single quickdraw, and the guy (first time climber) who fell died

Hi Jakk! In which forum have you read this story? Is it the one of belclimb?
Thanks.

i never said the OP wasn't doing a good service by wanting to move a poorly placed bolt, i only observed that the thread moved in the general direction of all the other "wear your helmets!" threads. that is all. i'm sorry you are such a weenie fitzontherocks, but sometimes things aren't as serious as they appear (not talking about the fall), but instead my response of ":righton: stick it up "UR" arse." it was a joke because the OP had mentioned that i didn't spell yourself correctly. Take a fucking pill fitz.

I'd just like to thank the original poster for this thread - until I read this I had never heard of this happening and I'm glad to know about it. I didn't think he was using this accident as an excuse to preach about helmets - he was just simply stating the facts of what happened. I can't believe how many people are unwarrantedly and childishly flaming him for falling on his ass (which we've ALL done), mentioning his decision to wear a helmet, or just accusing him that he made up the story. JBell, thanks for posting.

What, like you behaving like a prize arse then backpedalling furiously and trying to claim it was all just a joke? You do realize what a fool everyone must think you are, attacking someone who was nearly killed for some imaginary impropriety, right?

Okay, so you made a fool of yourself. Why not simply apologise and move on?
