Bring climbing gear, i.e. a trad rack. The more gear the better.

1. a comfy harness

2. a ledge if you can get one

3. lots of really little cams

4. lots of other cams

5. a beer cozy

6. condoms if your overly optimistic, or a stun-gun if your a gal (definitely required)

7. good sturdy shoes, three bottles of superglue, a pound of shoe goo and enough seem grip to make them last half the summer (or write your mommy a sad note about the state of your feet every couple of weeks)

8&9. come on, if i told you everything i learned how much of an adventure would it be?

10. Humility - very important, probably should be at #1 but i didn't think of it then.

Remember about the stay limit in the valley. Don't plan on camping the whole summer there.

Most important advice: Use your head, and don't get in over your head. Otherwise, what better place to be. Have fun.

Hmmm... catchy title. Perhaps adult supervision should be on your list.

How are you planning on staying in the valley? If youve never been there before dirtbagging for an entire summer will be tough.

I don't know, Ian! I was just poking fun at you. You could be rich!

I have never been to the valley (someday?) so i consider you lucky! With that said, I heard that if you are on route you can stay for a while (hopefully someone will confirm). I also heard that you can't camp at the base of a climb, but I think the loophole is if you have a ledge you can put it on the wall 5 feet off the ground and get around the rule.

Best of luck!

If you like puppies and candy you youngins can sleep In my Van for the summer. It may not have any windows but it is sound proof.

Exactly how hard is it to stay in Yosemite for a while? I'll second the question on the stay limit. I thought you could just put up your tent and stay till you were out of money or energy or both.

haha...I wish man...and so does everybody else. 7 nights stay max..i think...Perhaps 14 not sure......but you better believe in the summer, at least, their is a very low number of nights you can camp in a tent. less than 14 for sure!!

That's pretty crazy. So what happens if I want to be a bum after I quit this job and stay in yosemite for months on end? Do I have to get a house or something?

I found the following on the YNP website:

There is a 30-day camping limit within Yosemite National Park in a calendar year; however, May 1 - September 15, the camping limit in Yosemite is 14 days, and only 7 of those days can be in Yosemite Valley or Wawona.

Edited to add I don't know how strick enforcement of the policy is. I've not yet had the pleasure of visiting Yosemite.

This is all true if you're not very creative (i.e., if you refuse to sleep anywhere but an established campground). Ask around once you get there and you might figure out ways to stay longer. Many have before you. But don't give up on a great adventure.

Peace,
Gavin

A long time local was recently prosecuted in Federal court for overstaying his welcome in the Valley.

He camped there for about 20 years.

But he wasn't good, no. He was THE MAN.

You'd be lucky to last one week after your time's up.

But like a 1/4 of the people in Camp 4 will be in the same boat as you. They'll help you learn the tricks of the trade.

Treat with great suspicion, the advice of people who have 'never been there.'

This is were I was headed with my earlier advice. Take what dingus says literally; you're health could depend on it.

One more thing - DO NOT leave ANY type of food in your tent, especially while you're in it. The reason is simple. Yogi Bear is relentless, and his sense of smell is very good. Fortunately, the days of suspending food on ropes tied between trees is over. The park has placed hefty metal bins around Camp 4 for that very purpose. Use them.
