I've pulled and my share of 1/4" by 1" button heads in the black hills (SD) and put real bolts back in. LOL It is true that the reasons some lead are the same reasons some don't. A great man was once was asked "why do you climb the mountain" He said "Because it's there"

The last time I asked my self "Why the hell do I climb?" It was when I reached my belay only to find a single 1/4" button head with a home made hanger. Next to it was an empty hole. What happened to the other bolt I wonder? It scares me to think.

I have removed 1/4" button heads in J-Tree and WY also. Some people just should not put up new climbs. Plain and simple.

I started leading because of two things: 1. Most of the climbs I wanted to do couldn't be top roped and I didn't know any other climbers. 2. From the start climbing for me has in some measure about the acquisition of an ever-expanding set skills. I dig the whole experience from pebble pulling to suffering on the sides of mountains. Skiing, glacier travel, snow climbing, ice climbing, winter camping skills, winter mountaineering skills, free climbing, aid climbing, walls, short hard trad, long moderate trad, long hard trad, back country any of the above, sport climbing, bouldering, hiking, peak bagging.... leading is a big part of all them. Cheers DMT

I wanted to be the best of the best of the best. Besides how was I going to get into a climbing gang if I couldnt lead. I wanted respect from the other climbing gangs. In a world of war between sport and trad. I wanted to be a quikdraw killa. So I started leading and earned the respect I deserved. Gang wars thats why I joined. yup......

Cuz I wanted to pick up the crag bunnies and they think that top roping is teh lame. Plus the rope ruins the view of my amazing muscles as I'm pulling down hard.

boulderd for a really long time. loved it, but got a little bored with it. I learned a lot as far as technique goes and definitely got my weight training up...but then I got ambitious and wanted to do all those cool bouldering moves...but....40 feet in the air. Top roping is dumb...so....sport climbing it is! trad is coming up next :D too bad that's super expensive...

Because I wanted to play with all those cool bits and pieces that all the ballers have. They just look so cool. Actually it was largely because the local crag had lots of 5.10s (mostly b's and c's) but then kind of jumped in to 5.12s with almost nothing in between. Since I could climb all the 10s but none of the 12s, it made sense to make the 10s harder than flail at the 12s. The problem for me was that I was the most experienced climber in my circle, so finding anyone to even learn with was hard, and learning from someone was totally out of the picture. Mock-leading on a TR-solo setup was how I finally started practicing lead and meeting more experienced climbers.

I would gladly free solo if I wanted to stay on 5.8's all the time, but I don't. I like challenging myself, and I'm a big fan of not dying. So if reducing the risk of death in a climb necessitates it not being a climb any more then I guess you are right, I don't climb. I plug pro, and I'm proud of it! Aceto: 1) Is it possible for you to sound coherent? 2) You seem to edit every post you make. Then they are still incoherent. You are actually quite boring. Anyway, on to the OPs question. I started climbing before there were climbing gyms. A few oddballs would build woodies in the basement or garage. This was seen purely as practice and training. The first time I climbed, I met 2 guys (still friends, BTW) who taught me how to set redundant TR anchors, and how to belay. The second time I climbed, I grabbed the rack, and led 5.6 trad. You started at the bottom, and climbed to the top. Rock climbing was originally a branch of mountain climbing, and you cant top rope a mountain.

Aceto wrote: patrick u fail to understand why placin pro removes u from the experience of climbing. you are right about that, I do not "understand why placing pro removes you from the experience of climbing". I actually think placing pro elevates the experience, as it forces you to focus on your foot placement and jams in order to get a stance that you can place the protection from.

And if push comes to shove, you can always use the search function. I'm fairly sure I worked it out on my own... (maybe even PMed someone asking if I was right... they said I wuzn't, and said something about pankakes.)

j_ung wrote: Oh, and I started leading because all my climbing friends were doing it. It was full on peer pressure. Me too. Bonus. At my gym, we get these laminated pink name tags with a rubberband to tie to our harness. That lets everybody know you've passed the lead test. What more motivation does one need to start leading?? Sadly, the rubberband broke and I don't remember when I last saw my nametag. I think this means I'm not allowed to lead anymore. This probably explains why I suck at it now...not that I was great at it before. I should go look for my name tag now.

Because, even way back then, I could sense the formation of cyberspace and the internet (this was early in my Jedi training), and by I knew that someday, somewhere, there would be a place called rockclimbing.com, where I could pose and troll and opine with the true heroes of our age, if only I could use the hardest, most expensive, dangerous, complicated means possible to avoid walking around a fairly tall chunk of rock... ...and because I saw a pic of Lynn Hill, all tanned and crankin' hard in France. I knew then she was destined to be the mother of my lovechild. Unfortunately, no one has gotten around to letting Lynn know, yet, and I'm afraid our season in the sun is long past.....

Lazlo wrote: PTFTW = Posts That (are) Effing Time Wasters? You have much to learn young grasshopper. To the first question. Back in the day, there were no gyms, and no sport routes. So if you wanted to climb up something tall, you had to lead it. And after climbing TR a bit you got to wanting to climbing taller rocks. Since nobody else wanted the lead, it fell to me. And I was wanting to try the sharp end. So there it is.

I think its a bit more expensive than one of the certifications though. you never got the pink card! A loaded harness trumps a pink name tag. On a few privileged occasions, I've seen people in the gym with gear hanging from their harnesses. At first, I was puzzled...until I realized that only the very best climbers could swap their draws with the gym draws, clip, and send that Red Route.

I think someone should PM me...because WHEN I figure it out; I'm gonna have to blab it all over RC.com and the game will be up. What then? The climbing hierarchy of RC.com will be in ruins. Ruins I tell you! Chaos will reign. I don't want it any more than you do. Think long and hard about it. The future of RC.com post-whoreing is on the line...

It's only functional pieces are that it is difficult to decipher making it suitable as an inside joke and that it refers to page turns.

How bad do you have to get to get 'banzed'? Do the mods care about the PCI? Or is it normal forums?

When I first began TR, I started reading anything I could get my hands on...and I'd ask questions from anyone and everyone. I was asking how to tie knots at the local gear shop even! I had no partners. I was sad. Eventually, at one point, I brought my room mates out climbing. Only one other group was out climbing. My future partner and his roommates. Weird. We all got pizza that night, and my future partner and I headed off to another local crag in the morning. We both read Freedom and Anchors cover to cover. We learned sport on a 5.8 by just getting on and going. We learned trad by testing pieces while on sport routes. I'm still alive!

Cool. It's wierd how many different ways people get into it- hardly anyone goes the expected route of going through courses etc. Edit to add: nice profile pic.

Even better part....my first multi-pitch was with a complete noob! Four pitches of slabby 5.8. I remember we were at the second belay for about a half-hour organizing ropes and tying knots. I had read about and practiced everything involved...but had never done it! I taught him step by step as we went! I think I was a little insane. Edited to add: Thanks!

I remember my first multi-pitch route done without a "mentor" present. It was Agag's Groove on Bouchaile Etiv Mhor's Rannoch wall. A fantastic route. The approach scramble saw us already terrified, just 16/17 and still in school mind, and roped up. By the time we got on route we were shitting ourselves, but confident and excited none the less. Mark set off first and the next 3 or so pitches went fine- then came the fabled "nose pitch" where you had to traverse out of the groove and onto a kind of hanging slab. F*ck me were we ever scared. We sat there arguing hotly over who should lead it. I know what you're thinking, whoever is on the sharp end should get to lead it but that wasn't the problem- the problem was we didn't want to lead it, we were both way too scared. So we sat and argued, pointing out who was stronger, who had done more multi-pitch routes (none so scary as this, btw) etc. Eventually we got so heated that the fear wore off and we got used to the situation, and it somehow turned into an argument of who was going to get to lead the pitch. Mark got it, it was lots of fun but sure was scary. We were that close to abbing off...
