i have to say that mountain hardware makes some bomber gear. I have their windstopper fleece and their down parka and they both perform well above what i expected. The sub zero parka totally redefined the temperatures at which i can go bouldering in the winter. Though i am a bit biased because i dont have to pay ridiculous retail prices. Were i on a budget, i think that some REI gear is up to the same high quality and feathered friends makes the absolute best down garments on earth if you have the cash. peas matt

Wild Things: Simple, light, functional, reasonably priced, bombproof. Mammut: I've seen Arcteryx touted as an innovator here, and to a certain extent they are. But Mammut was producing softshell products in Europe years before any North American company. Pricey though. Patagonia: honorable mention for quality and design savvy. Points off for price. Big thumbs up for environmental responsibility. Forget TNF- it's a brand living on past glory and marketing clout, but definitely not quality or value. However if you need Goretex to accessorize with the SUV mom and dad bought you for college in New England, look no further. -Nubbler

The only pieces of gear that I would fight someone for is my arcteryx soft shell and my TNF down jacket. I guess any soft shell would do and any down would do, but I just appreciate them both so much. -Kate.

Nobody said LL Bean? I like my LL Bean clothing, and TNF goretex jacket w/ windstopper fleece. but that is just my preference. So far it seems to function well with me and climbing
