So the other day I was trying to get to a cool bouldering problem and i have found that unicycling is the best way to get to good problems it warms up the lower and upper body. The only flaw is you have to stop so often to explain what happened to you wheel or what the crash pad really is. So i was wondering what you tell people the crash pad is.

Tell them it's a portable mattress for filming backcountry-porn...or you have narcolepsy and it's strapped to your back in the event that you fall off your unicycle mid-nap.

I told a nice couple of fat sweaty tourists that it was a piece of wind resistance training equipment developed by the soviets for the cosmonauts, and that only since the fall of the USSR have they been available to the American public. Totally bought it.

i love unicycling outdoors, fun stuff. There's a great event in Moab every year. Moab Muni fest. Anyways, i like the backcountry porm idea. definetly funny. tell them that it got fused to your back while you were sleeping on it in a crazy ass house fire. fused right down the spinal collumn, like a comfortable Doc Oct.

I tell them it's a crash pad, used to cushion falls from short-ish rocks that I don't use a rope to climb. I tell them there's a whole subset of climbers who love to play around on boulders; some of them never rope up; some of them don't even own ropes and harnesses. I explain patiently that while the climbs are short, they are typically very difficult. I go into the fact that, while people rarely die bouldering, minor injuries, such as broken ankles, are common and that the pad helps to protect me from those injuries. They never believe me.

I was walking through Camp 4, headed to my car and for some reason had my crash pad on. This nice, older couple call me over, "Excuse me?" I wobble my way to their site. "What, dear, is that thing for? I've seen a lot of people with those here in this campground." I think for a moment, then look around. Then fall over backward. They laughed with reckognition, and silently I got up and went on my way. That beat any stupid joke I could have come up with.

I tell them that the crash pad helps keep me safe when I climb. As for the unicycle you are on your own. :D

Last summer a group of hicks in Vedauwoo asked me what that thing was. Now my crash pad is a bit big, it used to be a gymnastics crash pad, I cut it to about 5'x4' and put backpack straps on it. It basically covers my entire back. I calmly looked at them and looked up to the rock (the Nautilus), and said "it's for jumping off the top" took a pause "but this one's only good for about 40 feet". Then I walked off. I couldn't look at them to get their reaction or I would hav busted up laughing.

In reply to: "What, dear, is that thing for? I've seen a lot of people with those here in this campground." I think for a moment, then look around. Then fall over backward. Hahahahahahahaha.....it happens when I look up at those lovely trees at camp 4 or ElCap too - makes me swooon... Tell them it's your big-puppy's bed who's right behind you and would they please pass along some funds for dog-food so he stay's fed. I'd would just like to see someone/you/anyone on a unicycle riding to a crag w/a pad ~ would be a hoot..

If i were riding a unicycle with a crash pad on my back i'd likely flip them off and keep riding. if you're worried about offending anyone, flip them off, yell "I love you!" and than while riding off, call back "Think about it!" they will quickly be destracted by this paridox and forget about your pad.

I think my personal favourite was when me and a couple of friends were down in the Niagara Glen. Passing by this couple, the man yells out "So what are you guys doin today, shooting some rabbits?" I think we all gave him the weirdest looks ever, but realized later that he probably said shooting some rapids. But still, the rapids there are class 4 and 5, i certainly wouldn't take my crash pad down them
