I have went rappeling a few time with guys I know. We use figure 8 rescue devices to rappel out at red rocks. What would happen if I used the grigri to rappel? How about the atp-xp(?)(black diamond)? Will I spontaneously combust or will I land in hell or do they work fine for that purpose.

well, you can't really rap with a grigri like you can with an atc or figure 8, because you can't put both sides of the rope through it.

A gri gri is a single line device. An 8 or an ATC is both a single and double line rap device. If you don't understand this then find someone who can explain it to you in real life. You probably will not understand someone telling you on the internet if you do not understand that. P.K.

you can use the atc as you use the fig8. as fo rappeling with grigri, there are the instructions in the manual for the double line rappel, but id prefer a munter hitch over that method any day.

the ATC is a wicked easy device to learn how to use. Go find someone to show you and you'll catch on quick (try a local gym or outdoor gear store). It's a lot smoother (I think) to use than the gri-gri.

I don't think it matters between the fig 8 and the atc I just always wrap a shoulder sling around 3 times and clip it to my leg loop for an auto blocker.
