What is a no no, rappelling out of a helicoper or using a grigri?

Sounds dangerous. Wouldn't the grigri concentrate the static electricity generated by the chopper blades? That could cause a wicked shock to the balls.

I did not see the Fear Factor episode, but I also thought that you were not supposed to rappel on a grigri. I looked into it and on the Petzl website the grigri is classified as a belay device and a descender.

Those Not Real Climbers should have sought out some technical consultants, eh? DURRR?

And rappelling (on a single line) with a GriGri is totally kosher.

EDIT: OH MY GOD I misspelled rappelling! Bad Hils, BAAAAAAD.

Electrotesticution... cute.

Kosher? Kosher? Sure, maybe for someone with no balls. Fellas, rapping a single line from a helo on a grigri will mess you up. Women can do it, and I think that if you've got 2 guys simulrapping on grigris, four balls should be enough to ground the static charge and prevent electrictestecution.

Here's the crazy part I forgot to mention; guys can rap a double line with an ATC because the two strands cancel each other out. One ends up taking the positive charge, the other gets the negative charge, and your balls are spared.

So, when rappelling you're not descending? Shit, I'm all confused. Someone help me out here...

I have "descended" or "rappelled" on a single line with my gri-gri multiple times without any problems.

I think it would generate any more static electricity than the figure 8's that the military use to jump out of helicopters. I don't remember hearing about military personel being shocked that way and I climb with a former recon ranger.

Umm... and... so, according to the previous posts... It should shock the hell out of you to rapell with an ATC on a single rope? Guys... come on! Brighten up! Even if there were static it would be from just the rope, and well, it might shock you when you hit the ground, but... thats only if you hit the ground before the rope, as it would ground you out... hmm... lets see... are you jumping out of the chopper or rapelling?

Yeah i saw the episode when they were rappelling. I did not know they used a gri gri, but it looked funny as hell because the rap wasnt smooth at all. It was very jerky though. Looked dangerous.

Have you ever seen a lightning rod shaped like a figure-8, nice and rounded? No. You need sharp angles to attract electricity, and the 8 is too smooth for that. The gri-gri on the other hand has lots of sharp bends that WILL zap you.

So did you guys ever think while the people are in the helicoper that the earth could be building up a super huge positive charge, and then dump that into the gri-gri? Brings a whole new dimension to this conversation doesn't it? I am working on this topic right now for my senior mechanical engineering project.

Today's hero: crotch!

Ya see kids, *this* is how ya gotta do it.

1) be articyoolit with big words like and spel them right 2. no talk like internet tool.
2) keep the tone totally, totally straight.
3) infiltrate from the inside. Don't start the thread, invade it.

Nunna this "I'm a new climber can I make my own webbing" shit. There's trolling, and then there's just urinating in public.

It may or not be smart, but I know would repel out of a helicopter on a Gri-Gri for 50 thousand dollars

Umm. Let's get Xtreme now. Would you take it from a man for 50K? Just to put the gri-gri thing into perspective, you know.

No...why? are looking to blow 50k, or what? It's risk versus reward. I think that the Fear Factor staff probably thought their system was safe enough, and it didn't end up failing. However I probably wouldn't make a habit of rappeling on a Gri-Gri after reading through this forum.

Actually, it doesn't matter what you rap on, static electricity will be generated anytime you abseil from a heli. To prevent from being zap, the pilot normally lands and discharges the electric shock before arriving to the rap site.

i saw the episode, and at first i thought it was a grigri, but it looked a little big.

perhaps it was the I'D from petzl (the super sized grigri....)....

at any rate, it was funny to watch them bouncing down those ropes....
