What are some good exercises to strengthen one's middle and lower back? My upper back and shoulders are definitely a lot stronger, so I'm worried about becoming imbalanced.

Start doing some paddling - a canoe, kayak, or maybe even dragon boating. I started that up this summer, and all my back muscle pains are gone for the season.

back extensions and dead lifts are two great exercises for increasing lower and mid back strength. also, most yoga back bends do the same.
