Im still a beginner but i've bought most of my own top-roping gear. Recently I just found some webbing that my dad had for caving, he had never used it but its been in storage for 15 years at least. Does anybody know what deteroration rate for nylon webbing is? and would this webbing still be safe to use?

15 years seems like a long time. Play it safe and buy new webbing. It's cheap. 9/16" is only $.22 a foot. One inch isn't much more.

DON'T USE IT!!!!! The general rule that I have learned to go by is that webbing, no matter how well it was stored, should not be used after 5 years. Sorry man, but 15 years is just too long to know the integrity of the webbing. If you are in DIRE need of some webbing and are willing to trust your life to 15 yr old webbing please send me a Personal Message first. I would happily give you some of mine instead of reading about your death.

I've always thought that 5 years is the absolute maximum. Throw that old stuff away and buy new.

Hows it feel? Shelf life for a lot of things is a LOT longer than the working life. If the webbing is still supply and looks good (i.e. you can't tell it from new webbing) then there's a good chance it's alright. Of course, if its caving webbing it most likely muddy as hell and covered in bat shit. In which case don't use it except to back up rap anchors. Like they said, webbing's cheap!

Use it as a slack line but don't trust your life to it.

Don't use that old webbing. Or any old rope. Metal stuff is ok, but nylon deteriorates over time.

Do you have 20 dollars??? BUY some new webbing!!! Even at an expensive rate of $0.35 per foot, you could get yourself almost 60 ft. of 1" tubular. Webbing is cheap! Live Free! Play Hard! Climb On! duskerhu
