Rock Empire has GriGri for only $55. Most other places you will find are selling it for around $70. Climb On

Use an ATC. You'll thank you for it later.

I understand that it is dangerous to buy used gear. I don't know if I added the words, "That haven't taken any falls," would help or not, because some people lie. $55 doesn't sound bad at all. The reason why, is that a climbing gym is opening up nearby, and I want to get my friends into it, but I don't trust them yet. I've heard the spiel about how it develops bad technique, but I'm kinda concerned about health also.

Alvchen, IMO, ATCs are safer for beginners to use than Gri-gris. -Jay

The moral to this is don't mention gri-gri's on this forum or you will get harassed. The poor guy just wanted to buy one and everybody jumps on him. If he wants to buy a gri-gri, then I say let him.

And what's the deal with gear being advertised as "hasn't taken any falls"? That means little to me, as the security of a piece of gear could more easily be threatened by other factors. I trust my draws which have taken a bunch of falls just as much now as when I bought them. My grigri has held a few big ones, and it's still the same piece of gear. It's other things I worry about, like contact with acids, poor storage techniques, etc. Moral: Don't buy used gear from someone you don't know, even if you believe 100% the claims that it has taken no falls.

"Hasn't taken any falls" means a whole lot. This is a direct quote from Petzl, "Do not continue to use this product[Grigri]after a major fall or a major impact. Even though no external signs may be visible, a deformation may restrict its operation or internal damage may have occurred, thus reducing its strength." What's important here is the rate at which a piece of gear depreciates in value. Value having a direct corrolation to safety. The instant the piece of gear leaves the factory, it has already begun depreciating in value, may it be fractions of a cent. After taking a major fall, the piece of gear depreciates in value exponentially, thus reducing it's lifetime dramatically. When we buy used gear, we examine that piece of gear thoroughly before even thinking of putting a human on it. If the gear comes in contact with chemicals or is stored improperly, these can be seen by the naked eye. If we see any signs of misuse or mis-storage, it would be our loss, and we would toss out gear. If the gear took a major fall, you can hardly ever see what kinda of impact the piece of gear withstood, without looking at it through a microscope. If it's not safe to use used gear from a stranger. Why do gyms rent out used belay devices? FYI, I bought a NEW GriGri from http://www.rockempire.com. Admins: You can lock this thread If you want to continue this debate, create a new thread.
