I just saw this ridiculous movie called "Take it to the Limit," about 'death-defying, law-breaking climbers.' The premise is, a punk from L.A. moves to the country where he lives with his bad-ass climbing uncle- who climbs with leather gloves (?!). He gets really good- climbing like, 5.5 or 5.6, and wants to compete in the 'Open.'
The Open consists of speed-soloing slabs on 'Little Dome.' A classic line from the movie is: "Hey guys, let's go toproping on Little Dome." Also, the death-defying part of the movie is when the main charactor free-solos a 3rd class slab- while wearing a harness and carrying a rack. I just thought I'd start looking for other "climbing" movies.
(Oh yeah, Cliffhanger and Vertical Limit are out. That's too easy.)

Okay, let's all just stay off Vertical Limit. That had to be the biggest piece of dribble I have ever seen. Not a single thing was accurate and the concept was stupid. The damn thing was actaully worse than Cliffhanger!

Verical Limit made Cliffhanger look like a climbing movie. I'm still looking for one of them bolt guns though.

If you're ever curious about the climbing films climbers of my generation(Robbins, Chouinard, etc.) were exposed to, there were:
"Third Man on the Mountain"(Disney-Michael Rennie), "the Mountain"(R. Wagner,Spencer Tracy), "White Tower"(Glenn Ford), and an interesting B&W film starring Gilbert Roland as a bent Italian or Swiss guide who dies while rappelling - a great distance shot of him at the end of a long streaming rope - the name is something like "the Unconquered". This film, I imagine, has been lost forever.
If any of you have seen it I'd like to know.
Actually, to me these films seem pretty good compared to more recent vintage! (I did like Clint on "Eiger Sanction")

That movie sounds wicked funny. Where did you find it? I think it'd be great fun viewing for a gathering! (well, if there were a VCR around...)

I didnt know anybody else had even heard of that stupid movie. One day I saw it in the movie store and decided to check it out. I could only stand the first five minutes. In one scene the troubled youth comes upon a water tank. People are stringing ropes from the top and climbing up the tank. I guess the producers actually thought that was climbing or something. I think the kid stuns his local climbing community when he climbs a rope to the top of the tank on his first try NO WAY! do me a favor and rent the movie if you see it in the store and proceed to leave it in your car on the dashboard on a hot day and watch it melt.

"The Eiger Sanction" Wildtrail.
Actually saw it again last night. A friend has it on DVD. He proposed a drinking game...Anytime someone says something politically incorrect---DRINK... We stopped after the first few minutes because I had to drive home
Great climbing scenes, and a fairly accurate portrayal of climbing...albeit old school (hip belays, pitons, etc.)
Saw cliffhanger again last week....Man it's bad...but in a good way. Not only is the climbing UNBELIEVABLE (like stallone freesoloing 1000 foot routes in minutes) but the hiking is superhuman as well. John Lithgow and co. crash a plane... then hike something like 20 miles in a blizzard over mountains.
Amazing.
Made me want to return my BD harness though. Their cheap harnesses can fail with the static weight of a 110 pound woman.
I also gained new respect for 50 year old hemp rope. That stuff is bomber!

I liked scream of stone till one guy was soloing on his countless pitch fell and the rope caught him and broke his back on a 30 metre straight fall My queation was he was free climbing with no rope befroe that and who caught him and where did rope come freom
Worse than that was one just on TV called the Climb (sponsered by Billy Graham) turned ito god picture and climbing ego got in way of gods love

Yes, my fellow UGA alumni, that was the White Tower. Lloyd Bridges was an arrogant Nazi, and he did perish as you describe. I watched it a month or so ago on AMC, I believe. I had seen it years ago as well. It was based upon a novel by the mountaineer/author James Ramsey Ullman, who used to be active with the Amer Alpine Club in NYC. However, I liked his novel of the poet Rimbaud better. I'm still curious if anyone has seen the 1940s B&W with Gilbert Roland. Any of you old-timers out there remember other climbing movies from the dark ages?

What do you guys think of that Nisan commercial that has the people repelling off of thier bumper. Though that cave thier going into is cool is what they are doing pretty stupid or does it just matter on the ground tpye to use your car as an anchor?

OK, I finally saw a movie with a great climbing scene: "The Lost World",a 1925 silent film that has a scene where the monkey "jocko", with a light line around his waist, climbs a severe cliff to take a rope to adventurers stranded at the top. His climbing is absolutely authentic, and he on-sight free-solos difficult sections using an advanced dynamic momentum to ascend. His fluidity and style will make any aspiring rock star weep. Nothing digital, no computers, just raw reality. Carry on, Jocko!

There's are french movie where a bunch of 20 year olds free climb buildings and jump across buildings. Pretty cool.
