I climbed there last August during Sturgis week. My partner and I practically had all the climbs to ourselves because it was so hot. If you can try to do your climbing early each morning because the temps can soar to 100 degrees pretty quickly. I see you are from Texas so you already know heat. We tried to be off the tower before noon and then found some shade at the campground. If you can, try to go during Sturgis week and check out the thousands of Harleys. The only draw back is they make a hell of a lot of noise at the Tower's parking lot. We are talking 200+ bikes at any given time. [ This Message was edited by: superdiamonddave on 2002-07-24 10:09 ]

I was there last june(01) and it was damn hot (of course i am from colorado). The problem is that the rock is slick and sweaty hands dont help. Climb very early and plan on not climbing during the mid day or afternoon. The north side routes might be better all day and the west side during the morning. Also, check on the closures.

Ok, here is the beta. It will be fine to climb there. The tower is a freak'in sun dial. All you have to do is chase the shade. It will be hot, but I doubt it will be unbearable if play the shade. Pick your routes and start early. Try to find something on each wall aspect so you have a day planned out.

Sam Shafer and I climbed it on the 4th and 5th of July and chased the shade as suggested and had a great time. Durrance was crowded and there are many other (better) routes to the top. Plus you can ask the rangers how many climbers have signed up on the route(s) you intend to do, so you can modify your plans as necessary. Soler get's shady earlier than one would expect and El Cracko Diablo was in the shade by 2:30/3:00 which was plenty of time to Summit and get back down well before dark. Have fun!
