From my friend Kenji, who is runs the Friends of Josh.

I invite you to check out the FULL Climb Smart event info at
http://www.friendsofjosh.org . I promise it'll be worth your while, and your friends' too. The clinics alone are totally worth it, not to mention dinner, free camping, slideshows, and the amazing PILE OF SWAG.
So far not a ton of signups, so you can have Peter Croft all to yourself..... (kidding).

bumping this back up.

and for those of you who don't know, adam stack and sonny trotter are two of the better all around climbers in the world. you probably don't want to miss this unless you've got big plans that weekend.

Did anyone mention this is THE event to give back to the park? Think of all the magical moments you've had in Josh...c'mon you know it's true. Or maybe put a little into the karmic futures kitty in Joshua Tree, if you've never been. It's a national treasure and it's worth supporting for the 'Give Back' factor alone, not to mention the clinics, food, camping, slideshows, .... The swag is just bonus. We shouldn't take access or SAR for granted in J Tree, or the Access Fund for that matter (FOJT and AF are the split beneficiaries of this event).

True.....

Actually, the event begins Friday afternoon (OCTOBER 1st) with registration, check-in and two back-to-back shows at the Joshua Tree Community Center around the dinner hours.... also the best opportunity for swag acquisition, a key factor in determining how early one should bail from work to open your Josh season.

sure but it's a tax write-off so it'll come back to you, provided you have a job. but if you didn't, you'd probably be climbing too much to have need for a clinic.

you can also just go climbing during the day and catch the shows at night. that's cheap!

t-dog, check out this response from the fojt message boards. if you can't make the entire event, or just want to check out one clinic, you can email fojt and sign up for anything you want.

Quick question: What part of the monument will the camping be located? It said the first 120 registered have free camping but if it's in the monument isn't that first come first served? Just curious about more logistics. Thanks!!

by Joe @ 24 Sep 2004 06:36 am
I'm coming to town late Saturday. I would love to take a class, but I'm not so keen on registering if I will be missing them. Could you please provide a schedule. Thanks.

by Kenji @ 24 Sep 2004 07:38 am
Thanks for the good questions. First, we'll be camping in Sheep Pass Group Campground, and we have three sites. Group sites are reserved, though most of the rest of the park is not.

Second, if you'd like to make special arrangements (can't make the whole event) we can work something out for you (call our # and leave msg w/contact info). Essentially clinics will be at 10 and 2pm on Sat. and Sun. Joe, I'll try and fwd you a more detailed clinic itinerary today (someone else is covering that aspect).

UPDATE! There is now an option at the Friends of Joshua Tree website for getting info and participating in Climb Smart if you don't have a cool c-note laying around.
Go to http://www.friendsofjosh.org and hit the button 'can I see the shows but skip clinics?' or something to that effect.
Essentially $5 per show donation, or $25 gets you shows, raffle tix and dinner on Saturday night. And the 'give back' mojo that is most desirable in your karmic portfolio. (proceeds benefit FOJT, JOSAR and AF).

Hm.... it should be up and functional, but we've been doing a lot of updating lately to post clinic times and such. Make sure you've got the URL right at http://www.friendsofjosh.org and let me know if you still are having problems. I can email you most of the critical info.

Thanks for the interest, and I hope you can make it.

umm, this thread is a year old...

what is the date for this year's FOJT event? Maybe you could start a new thread with that information and set its event date accordingly (underneath the posting window -- those fields are what make topics show up as ''events'').

Dave Kennedy (founder of SANDAC http://deadpointpress.com/sandac/ / Access Fund Area Rep. / author of "San Diego County Climbing Guide") is working very hard along with others to make this a success.

I'm cooking dinner and could use some help pulling off a great feast of Mexican food. Any volunteers? Please feel free to email me and I'll send you my phone number!
