Hi, I'll be moving to the Aichi Prefecture in February, and will be living in Kariya city, outside Nagoya. I was wondering where the nearest indoor climbing, outdoor, or bouldering spots are. Any suggestions? Also, how would I get there by transit, since I won't have a car. I'll be looking for partners as well, so if you are interested, drop me a line. thanks in advance, adam ps- i should also note that I looked in the Route Db, but it's pretty empty in the Japan section. I also checked out http://www.outdoorjapan.com, but without knowing the area and what cities/regions that Kariya is close to, I found it less than helpful. Again, thank you for your help.

Konnichiwa Soulclimbz, Well, I really don't know of any climbing spots (actual rock) in the Nagoya area, but there is a gym in Nagoya, you probobly already know that, and I bet the staff there would know what's what with the vertical. I just moved in Anan-Cho, in the southern region of Naganoken and am only about two hours by bus from nagoya. In fact, I'm planning on coming down there next weekend (sept. 24) to check out the gym and ask them about rocks in the area. I'll let you know what I find out. I am totally looking for people to climb with. I brough my whole rack, to look at when I am thinking longingly of home and the hour and a half drive to Yosemite and to use in my English classes. Point being, I am totally up for any climbing basically anytime. I've been climbing for about eight years I guess, mostly bouldering now but still really into trad, sport, whatever. Drop me a line sometime.

Hi, I live in Saku which is in the middle of Nagano Ken. Towards the south are Ogawayama and Mizugaki yama, the main granite trad areas in Japan. I don't know how far they would be for you, but you might be able to make a weekend trip of them. besides that there's Futagoyama and a bunch of other limestone sport in Saitama and Gunma prefectures. Maybe we can rope up a couple of times before I return to Cali in November, Ahh, Cali, ahhhhhhhhhhhhh I miss you so, why did i ever leave? baka aho. well Gamba

Thank you very much for the advice. I'll definitely be bringing my rack with me to Japan, so I'll have plenty of gear to share as well. I'll be sure to toss a PM when I cross the pond. Thanks again, adam

Hi soulclimbz "Hatenko" ( http://rockgym-hatenko.hp.infoseek.co.jp/ ) is a gym "on the right side of Nagoya" from your perspective, not far from Kariya city. Just take Meitesu Nagoya line towards Nagoya and get off at Narumi station, take the south exit from the station, turn left on route 1 (big road) and follow that road to the traffic lights after the "coco" convenience store, take right across route 1 and walk 5 blocks, turn left and after 50 meter you should arrive at the gym. Unfortunately it seems like you need a car to get to the spots around Nagoya. I've only been here for two and a half week, and it's still to warm to climb outdoors around here, I suppose, so I have not managed to bum any lifts to any of the places around here, so I cannot help you with that. I flew from Europe and so I was only allowed 20 kg luggage, so I did not bring any rope or rack, just my harness and some quick draws. Anyway, feel free to mail me for more information later on, either on the mail-address I've listed in my profile, or on user wiklund [at]math.nagoya-u.ac.jp Oh and I also looking for climbing partners in Japan, apart from Swedish I speak English, and some German, but unfortunately no Japanese as of yet. I've climbed for more then 10 years and doesn't climb snow and ice but pretty much everything else from bum-starts to alpine rock.
