When I bought a rope I got an advertisement/postcard thing that allowed me to buy 1 year of Urban Climber mag (6 issues), an Urban Climber T-shirt, a brush set, and an Inertia 1&2 DVD set for $24.95. I couldn't resist what I thought was a killer deal. Was it? I think it's a lot of cool junk for the price. By the way, has anyone seen these DVD's? How are they?

The free schwag is pretty cool. I found the Inertia 1 & 2 DVD boring, but if you enjoy watching sport climbing, there's some pretty awesome stuff. If The Australia Project was included in your deal--that's a pretty awesome vid, and retails for $30 on Amazon (I think). Well worth it... Best part: my neighbor subscribed, and I got to watch the videos and read the mags for free!

Urban Climber has some good pics, but that's about it. If you're in to the "fashion" side of climbing (bet you didn't know there was one), then this is the magazine for you. My ex bought me subscription for my birthday last year and I have to say that I'm not all that saddened by the expiration of my subscription...

Just got the mag this month. It sucks. It's definatley all about fashion and includes training techniques on pulling plastic and how positive "female energy" is while bouldering. I don't really agree with competitive climbing and competitions and what not, this is discussed regularly. And seriously, how many different training techniques do you need to use? Just climb. Instead of featuring an area for climbing, they discussed how great a gym in Portland was. I guess I'm no Urban Climber. Hopefully it gets better next edition.

As a reader of them all I defintely have to agree with the general concensus so far. UC has great photos...better than the others in my opnion, but the articles, while some very good, just aren't on the same level as Rock and Ice. For example, the guy who does the Yo, Joe column needs to be shot...repeatedly in the foot, until he can no longer stand it and wants to take his own life... Did I just type that? oops.

Are you suggesting that trad climbers are left with their copies of Alpinist and Oprah (which serves both as porn and inspiration)?

In reply to: 1 year of Urban Climber mag (6 issues), an Urban Climber T-shirt, a brush set, and an Inertia 1&2 DVD set for $24.95. You'd have to give me at least that much stuff in order to get me to "read" UC.

You can still climb hard AND suck at life.

In reply to: nice. the ultimate package. you can fall asleep reading the magazine. you can fall asleep watching the video. then wake up and brush your teeth. I like Inertia 1 and some of 2. It has a lot of climbing. The only other climbing video I have seen is Return to Sender. R2S sucked in my opinion. Too much talk and technique tips, not enough climbing. It is also way too produced. I much prefer the do it yourself quality of the Inertia DVD. It was basically a group of young friends that threw the thing together. The music on Inertia 1 kicks ass as well. Not so much on 2. I would've liked it much better if there was more trad but, I'm generally happy with the DVD.

The deal is great if you want the loot. As for UC the only friends that I have that subscribe don't read. They just look at the pics. The articles are trash and the interviews are predictable. Rock and Ice has a one year with an HRT hang board for $45. Better loot. Better mag.

I got a subsrciption from my aunt from christmas, yes, it was a little early. and for some reason, I got a DVD called "5 days in the life of women who climb" (or something like that) and there was almost no climbing in it. there was a part where one of the women talks about how hard it is to be a female climber because she had anorexia, well tough shit... but planty of men have had anorexia too.... -Sean and PS-- I dont min dthe mag, it usually has a ton of good pictures, i really like the layout, though some of the articles could use work...
