Obviously, you're joking. Sudan is one of the most dangerous countries in the world.

hey I know lots of people who've worked in Sudan, mostly in Darfur & southern Sudan for humanitarian agencies.

none of them has been a climber :(

From what I remember Khartoum is flat. Sudan is a huge country (biggest in Africa) so there is bound to be some rock somewhere - don't know if anyone is climbing it.

Garang died when his helicopter hit a cliff - so there must be some in the south down in the dodgy border areas with Uganda. eg the Nuba mountains. There is a volcano near Nyala if you are going to be in Darfur.

just browsing on the net:
this is Kasala - between Khartoum & Port Sudan

The hot rock trip in 2001 went to Kassala and set some routes:

I'm living in rural Ethiopia... if I can ever get a visa to Sudan maybe I'll drop by and offer a catch - with one offered in return of course ;-)

I could be in Sudan as early as the end of June. Do you know about the difficulty of flying from Sudan to Tanzania. I have engagements in Tanzania at the end of July.

Ive worked in southern sudan - years ago for an NGO. There is definately potential, but (at least in the south) land mines will keep you from exploring too far afield. I remember seeing many dome-like formations, etc. near Tambura and toward Bahr-el-Ghazal.

Dont know about north (pics look intriguing though). If you are posted to southen Sudan - you'll get to fly out every 6 weeks or so (if with the UN or an NGO), probrably to Nairobi. Good climbing at Luekenya and Frog around Nairobi and a few climbers contactable through the MCK. I have a climbing buddy living in Nairobi now and Im there (working but also climbing) every few months.

Climbing did an exellant article of climbing Africa and the different countries within it. You may want to pick it up to get ideas. Also look to climbing Morraoco (sp?)

Now that sounds about right for climbing in Sudan!

I take it from your post you living in Khartoum now. Given Bashir's overall weakness, Turabi's involvement via NIF in backing JEM in Darfur and SPLA fringe element (or maybe even mainstream) backing SLA in Darfur mixed in with the Janjiwiid that - though tied to the gov - are essentially violence specialists that have their own agenda too......I think things are about ripe for a NIF-led coup to unseat Bashir - or perhaps another al-Mahdi revival. Good luck - should be an interested few months for you.

Seriously though if things get crappy enough, Nairobi isnt far and has good climbing near the city.
