Bush to sell National Forest lands

"Bush team seeks to sell land
The Bush administration Friday laid out plans to sell off more than $1 billion in public land during the next decade, including 85,000 acres of National Forest property in California..."

"...The public will have 30 days to comment after maps of the acreage proposed for sale are published, which the agency expects to do by the end of the month. Some parcels might be removed after public comment if they are deemed too valuable to lose..." Where these will be published? Who knows.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/3651464.html

I would have posted this in community, but I think in this case, politics and climbing issues are inseparable.

People, you'd better get political if you want to save your climbing areas...

Man, I might as well just have my senators on speed dial. Something like this seems to happen every day.

Update: Website showing lands to be sold.

http://www.fs.fed.us/land/staff/rural_schools.shtml

Public comment period begins on February 28th. Please spread the word.

"The Forest Service will be publishing a notice in the Federal Register around February 28th, requesting comments from the public. At that time, more detailed maps will be available for all lands identified as potentially eligible. The location of the maps will be published on this site at that date."

I looked at it very briefly, and it's difficult to know what is actually being sold: it lists tracts of land by Forest Service name/number and latitude/longitude (who has time to figure out what areas these are?)
I guess we'll have to wait until maps are posted on the 28th.

An example of the current data:

FOREST :TRACT NAME OR NUMBER:TOWNSHIP OR COUNTY:RANGE SECTIONS:ACRES (GIS)

Sequoia 21 13S 26E 7 38 NESE
Sequoia 21 13S 26E 8 38 NWSW
Sequoia 21 14S 27E 17 146 S2NE.NWSE,NESW
Sequoia 21 21S 30E 18 17 L3
Sequoia 21 23S 30E 16 59 SWNE,W2SENE

I'd like to invite President Bush to go climbing with me. Just a shame I can't afford safe gear for the both of us.

Edited to say:
This really bites, better get in touch with our Senators and Congressman.

Good for the Bush administration. The Federal government owns way too much land.

sounds like another guy with the political blinders on.
Like someone who says, it's Bush, he's a Republican,
anything he does must be good.

Why not sell Yosemite? The Federal government owns
way too much land. Rite? No, that land is being protected.

This is probably the nicest anyone here will be to you.

To bad it's [brown]public[/brown] land he's selling.

It's a good thing this deal is open to comments. How many of us will actually comment to the people we need to comment to though?

"To help fund this initiative, the Administration recommends selling a limited number of acres of National Forest System lands around the nation."

How do they call that list a "limited number"? There's got to be over a thousand parcels of land on that list including lands from ~30 states. This is rediculous.

Btw... i'll be nice and say that yes, the gov. owns a lot of land out west, but in the east things are very different. It is people and "the people (as in you and me-the public)," who own the land. The land owned by "the people" is the only thing besides high prices, from keeping developers from building wallmart's and subdivisions everywhere.

This sounds potentially terrible. Makes we me wonder who would buy those lands? Developers perhaps?
Did anyone catch the name of this Initiative? They are linking it to a Rural School funding program. What a bunch of assholes. It's for reasons just like this that I quit working for the forest service many years ago.
OP. Thanks for the heads up.

Don't worry! Considering that you're overseas you're probably already being monitored with Bush's warrantless wiretapping :-)

I wonder how much of this was the PRIVATELY OWNED LAND that was taken by the Feds under the Clinton Administration, in the name of "preservation"..?

Furthermore, would you still complain if it were being sold or given back to the Indian tribes from which it was initially stolen from..?

due to the lack of knowledge of the law that has been displayed here, i'll stick with the trend and won't make any sort of reasoned argument...
lets just all buy the land that they are selling (at least the stuff near climbing areas) and then not do anything with it. this way we can each have our own private and pristine campsite. skeet.

It is a good thing that only 5% of this country is actually developed by those evil Wallmart companies and that ever annoying middle class urban sprawl. That leaves 95% of the land across this country to be fought over by our elected officials and special interest groups. (Might not be enough)
The land that is being sold by the feds will surely be regulated by the lawyers of powerful tree huggers, putting so many stipulations on the use of the land by its private owners that only the extremely rich will be able to afford purchasing it and doing nothing with it while they battle for years in the courts.
This is in essence taking money from the rich to provide for schools (another tax on the rich) because they do not pay their fair share.
All you Bush haters should love this proposal.
I say leave the polotics out of climbing forums.

The way to reign in Bush is to chop off the legs of his support in Congress. Coming into an election yeareyhave to be asking themselves... is this what passes for leadership in the republican party these days... a lame duck president galvanizing the opposition coming into an election year?

Logging is the clear target of many of the parcel proposals in California.

Write letters to republican congressfolk running for reelection...

don't waste ur time yo. I'm tight with my congressman and he don't care at all. They are all in bush's bag of puppets. They just want to fund their special interest groups, so these foolz say how high when he says jump.

sad but true. And to everyone that voted for this moron, THANKS. Glad you care more about religion than the world.
