I drove up to Montezuma today to check it out. The Webster pass and Deer creek spots both had FS signs about the roads being maintained by private owners blah, blah. I was pretty sketchy about parking and playing in unfamiliar areas for fear of not finding my car when I got back. There are signs all over the place saying not to park on the road-so where do you park? Second-how much of those roads are private property and where is it kosher to leave the beaten path? Going to check out Herman gulch tomorrow afternoon. Thanks for the beta.

So last Saturday the 19th we made the long journey down to Monarch pass. They had gotten a foot of snow in the past week, and the lack of traffic there made the drive worth it. Our first drop was into a Southeast facing bowl, which has a mini golf course cliff line towards the bottom. Evan enjoyed some turns at the top. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_003.jpg Then we questioned slope stability below the rocks, Evan stepped up and decided to test the slope for us. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_005.jpg Yep, snow is stable. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_006.jpg Todd stuck his landing (so did I but no film) way to represent snowboarding! http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_008.jpg Scott on the other hand... http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_007.jpg Then it was time to check out Pecker bowl on the North face of Mt Peck. Skinning out to the Peak. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_009.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_010.jpg Some of the great looking chutes on the way out to Mt Peck. Not as big as vert, but so many lines. I think the next stable period we get down there, I'll spend some time yo yo-ing on these. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_012.jpg Peck Peak in the background. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_013.jpg We dug a pit on the bowl and get pretty solid results. So it was a greenlight to drop it, one at a time of course. Vince Laying down some turns. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_015.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_016.jpg and Scott. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_018.jpg Evan. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_022.jpg Todd laying down some nice tracks. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_024.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_025.jpg Dave just behind him. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_028.jpg Scene of our crime http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_033.jpg We then skinned back to the Radio Tower area and went out the point skiers right. I didn't realize it had such nice steep chutes. Probably the best lines of the day. Dave getting it on. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_035.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_036.jpg A loot at the point we came down. http://i2.photobucket.com/...narch2-18-06_039.jpg And our lines. Dave and I did the lookers right line, the rest of the crew went to the left. Both were super nice lines and I am looking forward to doing them again. http://i2.photobucket.com/...006/MonarchLines.jpg It was a perfect day.

Nice TR Gary! What a great day on Sat., snow was fantastic with lots of sun. I agree the chute on the thrid drop was the best. I want to ski that again. I guess everyone made it out OK, I had to bail and was a little late getting to the dinner engagement. OH WELL!

Me and some friends from work are heading up into the valley on the Meadow Creek trail out of Frisco to ski some rumored stuff up there Sunday afternoon. Nothing big. Will be skiing with some beginners (i.e. me), so no pressure. Give me an e-mail if you'd like to join.

My pleasure! The "avy bomb" pic may be the "blowing up" shot of the season. I think it beats Jon's "teleplant" from last year... http://i2.photobucket.com/...-2005/April5005I.jpg Snow is in the forecast this week. What are your plans for the weekend?

It's been awhile since I've posted up on this thread, but we have still been getting after the BC. Last weekend I made it up to Crested Butte with BeckerW and we stayed with evanmfreeman. What a freaking great day! We climbed up Skookle. I believe our total uphill vert was 4800ft. 3500 the first climb and 1300 the second. We started out around 9:30-ish I believe. Gotta love the BC warning signs. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_001.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_002.jpg and my favorite part of the warning. http://i2.photobucket.com/.../UnreasonableAct.jpg evanmfreeman and beckerw getting ready to kick my ass all over the hill. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_004.jpg Skinning up. We weren't even halfway at this point. The first climb came out to 3500 vertical feet. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_005.jpg Evan and Will on top of a mushroom. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_010.jpg A look out at the surrounding terrain from that point. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_007.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_008.jpg Cody playing in the snow. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_011.jpg After climbing 3500 vertical and me having a global thermal nuclear meltdown after falling out of the skin track on suncrust, we did our first drop. Steep 40-45 degree trees on top, mellowing out to a nice 35-38 degree pitch. Excellent turns, and with over 20" of snow for the week, great untracked pow. Around a 1500 vertical drop to a bench. No pics sorry. After that we decided to take the ridge again. About halfway up it stopped snowing and the sun broke for a bit, giving this great view of Mt Crested Butte and the valley floor that we had climbed up from. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_012.jpg Then Cody started barking like crazy. When I caught up to him, he was bothering this fellar. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_014.jpg I quickly got Cody to leave the porcupine alone. The 'pine' was only 4 or 5 feet away from the skin track almost level with me, even though he was 10 or 15 feet up in the tree. So after getting back to the ridge top, totally exhausted we got to drop again. This time for double the vert we did before. Best snow of the day, bottomless pow. Evan getting after it. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_016.jpg Will and Cody, a little blurry. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_020.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_021.jpg Then after dropping 2500 vert or so we got to a spot where Will had run out of steam on the flat. I told him to go ahead and change over to split mode as I glided past. Turned out there was one last steep section to go down and cross a snowbridge over the creek. Will did some "extreme" skiing. Check out the sick form yo. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_022.jpg He managed to stick it. A look back at Skookle. http://i2.photobucket.com/...Butte3-18-06_025.jpg There is about another 500-700 vert you can't see in the pic. The stuff that looks like dirt is actually scrub brush. I am probably around a quarter mile away from the base of this ridge. It's huge. It took us an hour to skin out in the dark and heavy snow. Fortunately it was a flat skin. Our routes up are in the yellow, and the red lines are our descents. http://i2.photobucket.com/...03-18-06/Skookle.jpg Amazing stuff.

Looks like the trees off of Peck's were nice. I just didn't have the legs after doing 4800 vert of climbing. Totally wasted. I think I might be up for Monarch this coming Saturday though...

i just noticed this post... schuykill (aka skookil) is still going off--i skied 18" or so of fresh on sunday, and i was the _only_ person on the ridge. it's probably the 2nd most popular BC route in CB, and i was the only person out there! of course, breaking trail in 18" by myself was fun, as was choosing my line.... c'mon out, the snow's just fine!

I have not. Try pm-ing evan (the guy on the post above yours). He lives in Gunny, just down the road from the 'Butte. Right now, he's probably on the road, but I know he checks the internet from time to time. Maybe he can point you in the right direction.

thanks! it was a low budget 80's early 90's vhs, but it really captured the essence of bumming.
