My family and I are N00bZ, never been on ropes outside but have enjoyed ourselves at the gym and on boulders. We'll be in Yosemite the week of April 10th and would love to get on top-roped rock with someone who really, really knows what they're doing, whether a professional service or not. Any ideas would be very welcome. (And sorry if this is the wrong forum, but "climbing partners" seemed wrong too.)

I think the recommendations above are good. If time permits, why not take an outdoor climb class or two between now and then? You can still hook up with a guide, but you'll know more, and have some outdoor experience. Not sure if this page is current, but the Rock I & II classes should be good preparation: http://users2.ev1.net/~daltman/outdoor.html The first one will have you setting up top-ropes, tying knots, & rappelling. the second will have you lead on gear. It will also reinforce some of the stuff you learn in the first.

Great thought, David. Now, would everyone on these forums please send my wife an email asking her to give me both Saturday and Sunday completely free to take rock climbing classes?

I second the vote for Yosemite Mountaineering School. I went there for a week the last time I got laid off and had a great time. I'd highly recommend two guides: Jeff Scheull (sp?) and Conn (his first name is Constantine... last name seems unnecessary). Make sure they guide you up something tall. It's a real trip. (I too was a little more than a gym climber prior to the trip...) Good luck and have fun! -Joe

pay my way out there and you've got yourself a ropegun. willing skip class for any length of time you want if it involves a trip to the valley... edited to add: after checking the yms rates, it seems i'm a cheap date

Talk to Karlbaba before you commit to the store bought option. He's a master at the 'custom tailor.' He's in the islands somewhere right now, so there may be a delay on the response. He's worth waiting for. Check out his site too. He's guided noob to expert and all points in between and he's a helluva guy too. http://member.newsguy.com/~climbing/ DMT
