Does anyone have any useful information on buying a car in Australia? In a few weeks I will be flying into Sydney for a 3-4 month climbing trip and I wanted to purchase an inexpensive (1500 or less) vehicle for the trip. I've heard about King's Cross Car Market. What should I know about pink slips/white slips, registration, etc? I've never been to the country and know little about how car purchasing functions. Any other pertinent information/hints/tips would be great, too.

When you buy a car you must make sure that the car has a roadworthiness certificate to be able to register it in your name. $1500 won't buy you a very good car. Try to buy at a reputable used car yard and make sure you get a warranty with it. Join the NRMA and get them to check the vehicle out before you pony up with the cash. Being in the NRMA may be a good thing for you as it will ensure that you can get some roadside assistance, in fact if you purchase the premium pack and your vehicle breaks down they may even put you up in a motel and may even offer you a hire car while yours gets fixed. Check into this though as I may be wrong.
