I looked in both the gear section, and attempted to run a search on these shoes, both with no results. I'm thinking about buying these as a birthday gift for a good friend who wants to get into climbing.

Don't. Get him some Evolve's or Montrails, but Never, NEVER get MadRocks. Friends don't let friends buy them MadRocks. I'd rather my friends bought me rollerblades. Or lycra. hosh.

I have got a pair of these and they are fine, just like Mocs but cheaper. However, I would not recomend them for a beginner. Too soft for weak feet and they will wear out VERY quickly with less than precise foot work. Good Moc replacement though. Cheers, DRS

The bandits are 100, the maniacs are only 60. I'm not concerned about the strength of his feet, he's a middle/long distance runner. My only concern is price. If it doesn't stick (the sport, not the shoe), i'd rather not be out another 40 bucks.

What about sierra trading post and the REI outlet store? They all are running pretty good deals on climbing shoe sales right now. Recently saw that one of those sites had a bunch of different scarpa shoes on sale for as little as $50 or $60.

Bullsh*t! I have a pair of MadRock Flashes and they are just starting to wear through the toes after 3 years. I don't know specifically about the Maniacs but in general I like them (as well as Evolv - I have both). If you are going to climb rough and sharp granite though, I'd get something with not quite as soft a rubber. For smoother rock the MadRocks are great. My son had Montrails and the rubber is too hard for him, he keeps coming off foot holds. He's going back to MadRocks

I've had no problems with the Hooker. Don't know about the Maniac .The Hookers are awsome, although the rubber is a bit thick.

That's what's kinda nice about a free market society, you can choose a product you like and support it. Conversly, if you find a product you don't like, you can speak against it. hosh.

i had hookers, but the toe blew out in little cottonwood canyon, but i was climbing above my grade and my feet were sloppy and raking across coarse-crystalline rock. i turned around and bought flashes and they are great shoes for the price. the rubber is soft, but nice when you use your feet properly. for someone just getting into the sport, there is no reason to buy a high-end shoe. mad rock is just fine. i think it's nice of you to be buying a friend shoes :)

In reply to: ...I'm not concerned about the strength of his feet, he's a middle/long distance runner... I haven't used these shoes but I can tell you something about going from distance running to climbing. I don't think the foot stength that you gain from running really translates to climbing, especially if he spends most of his miles in heavier training shoes (as opposed to light weight road flats or track spikes). Even if it did, it woudn't make up for the fact that he will probably have some pretty sloppy feet to start with. Anyway, the Flashes are only 10 bucks more and a lot of people seem to be pretty happy with them.

http://www.sierratradingpost.com/...rue&sid=10B04A208D6E Here's a bunch of cheapies. If he's a beginer, get him cheap shoes. He'll wear through them no matter what. Oh, and running has little to do with foot strength. I did track and CC for many years and it made no difference when I started climbing my senior year. It's all in the footwork.

my first pair of shoes were Flashes, after about 2 weeks of climbing. they were fine for me, assuming i didn't try putting my weight on my feet for too long. i would have chosen the maniacs, but i didn't like the look of the shoe. i say that you should go for either

screw the maniacs -- get him a pair of hookers, the lace kind. they've been loyal to me for a couple years now and fit really well. admittedly the rubber is pretty thick, but the variances in it help a lot with smears and whatnot. don't let anyone trash your perception of mad rocks -- they're solid

I bought a pair of these last week and used them in the gym wednesday. I was happy with them on everything I was doing. I like them better than the Mad Rock Mugens I used to have.
