"The fin-shaped mass is about 300 feet tall and growing 4 feet to 5 feet a day, said Dan Dzurisin, a geologist at the U.S. Geological Survey." Wow, a slab that keeps on growing! That could F up one's plans to rap off at the end of the day!

On the other hand, you just need to get a stance and ride to the top.

http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/...es/MSH/Images/MSH04/ Found some detailed photographs of the new slab. Click on the large size for really detailed pictures. Looks like this would be about as scary as it could get. My guess is if its growing 5 feet a day that there would be a lot of falling rocks.

You are correct there are a few cracks on that slab. Those fumes look pretty noxious. Might have to bring some Os if you plan on sending it...maybe a Stillsuit as well.

if you looked at the thermal immaging on a couple of the photos it looks it could be 30+ C and spots that are even hotter than that, i think that your shoes might melt

Oh hell, Poko gets hotter than that on a summer morning! 50 C no problem. The noxious gases are a bit of a concern. Bottom line - it's a good thing I don't live within driving distance of St Helens. :P

But wasn't there just a thread on what to do if it's too hot to climb? This might be WAY too hot to climb, if you get my "drift"... hosh. SAWEEEET!!!! :D :D :D

Talk of climbing this reminds me of some stories about people trying to get the FA of the "new" St Helens after it blew. Sneaking up the snowfield under a sheet while choppers buzzed overhead.

Did you guys see this video? http://vulcan.wr.usgs.gov/Imgs/Video/MSH/MSH06/MSH06_MOVIE_spine_from_brutus_04-28_to_05-03-06_thumbnail.jpg Not only does it show the growth, but it shows the top disipearing about as fast as it grows. As was said, if the gasses don't get you, the rockfall will. Still, I'm glad I'm not close enough to be tempted

And as soon as this new dome breaks the rim's height (if it ever does), there will be a new FA to be had. Not only that, but they won't be able to permanently record how tall the mountain is, because the height will be increasing every day.
