Hello all, I'm flying from the UK to Vegas next week, and I want to do some shopping for outdoor gear. I need some basic stuff like sleeping bags and hiking boots, and possibly some climbing kit as well. Never been to vegas before, so could anyone recommend the best place to visit to get this kit? I'm planning on touring the grand canyon area, painted desert, glen canyon, bryce cnayon, possibly Zion and Joshua tree if I get time. What climbing guides should I buy, and is it mainly bouldering, or is it worth bringing a rope and quickdraws etc? Thanks in advance :) Mark

Is it all mostly bouldering? Yeah, but there are some real highball problems. It could be all bouldering if thats what you like best. There is also a gracious amount of sport and trad there. Just bring the toys you enjoy using, and you will find places to use them. Guidebooks: Falcon press guides are pretty predictable, there are also free web based guide books, like the ones on www.drtopo.com and you can buy stuff from www.supertopo.com .

You Funny Marky silly boy, tricks are for Kids. you should be able to get most of your climbing gear from Walmart. That's a good outfitter in the US. down off Charleston Blvd. Enjoy :D

there's an REI in Henderson...which is adjacent to sin city. Also Desert Rock Sports on Charleston and Cimarron has loads of gear. They both have websites if you want to check them out. REI.com & desertrocksportslv.com Feel free to PM me if ya need any other info Bryan

It doesn't sound like you are planning to spend much time in Red Rocks... or did I miss something? If you are going for climbing and will be in Red Rocks the Brock guide is miles better than any of the others. Regardless, it will likely be pretty hot and you will be driven into higher country anyway. If I were you and I was planning that tour I would just buy a pair of shoes and a chalk bag. Everything on that loop would be too hot for me to enjoy climbing. Find your way to Priest Draw and other Flagstaff bouldering areas. Spend the rest of the time walking in the heat as your pasty white skin dries and flakes off in the dry heat.

lets see, you're in town (i assume from the airport) and heading out via northbound I-15.....and you need outdoor gear. probably the closest option is REI on the corner of I-215 and Green Valley Parkway- they'll have everything you need. if they dont, since you're already in the area, Sports Chalet is another good option- Marks and Sunset Road, just west of the I-515/93/95 and Sunset. REI has a large selection of climbing guides...the main concern right now is that you're touring the desert southwest in the off season- its going to be hot. temps are broaching 100 degrees right now...so prepare accordingly. good luck!

Thanks all! I didn't realise it was gonna be quite THAT hot over there at the moment. I got these plane tickets for free, otherwise I would have looked into the trip a bit more. Boots and chalk bag only sounds sensible. Living in the UK means I haven't seen the sun for about the last 8 months, so I've got to change my skin from blue to white before I start thinking about a tan. We'll be bringing a tent to stay in, so how cold does it get at night this time of year? I can't wait to get over there. It's been raining non stop for over a week in this shitty country! Cheers all

lows are in the 60's...they'll be lower in the high desert, but still pretty comfy- you wont need any sort of stout tent. in fact, a tarp and a pair of trekking poles may be more than adequate!
