In reply to: People shouldn't be judged on what they drive... Let the judging begin when they climb, but then again they might be new to the sport. If they have to ask you what you do with an ATC then let the judging begin. You judge people too???? So do I!! Fuck the process, its the result that matters!!!

In reply to: ...stupid g'dam hippies... mmummble mmumble. LMAO! As a future (next week!) Lexus owner I resemble that remark! :x But seriously...why should it bother you? Seems your stereotypes are pretty well entrenched. Some people with luxury cars are pretentious a$$holes, hiding behind their money like a shield, some dirtbags (et tu, Brutus?) are pretentious a$$holes who use their lack of money as a weapon. Personality is what it's about, not how much is in their portfolio.

What bugs me is how in the hell do these people justify spending more money on their vehicles than they do on strippers? I know that I couldn't do it.

Well, how ībout you ask a friend of yours to lend you his Masserati for the night, and see how much you have to spend to get women to strip for you. Hot fast cars = hot fast women_______no duh...

Some of the finest people I ever met are rich. And they're less likely to biff in your car window and boost your gear at the trailhead than some dirtbag driving a beater. But judging a person by what they drive is about the same as judging them by how they dress, or by how many piercings they have in their face.

In reply to: I often find myself repulsed when I see a Land Rover or Porsche Cayenne at a crag trailhead. Does that ever bother you too? My boss recently told me that I should buy a BMW SUV. I asked why. He told me that it would be great for rock climbing trips. I told him that I hate seeing "rich f---" at climbing spots. - He's a rich f--- and it didn't go over too well! All I can think of is some noob plastered with TNF or an old dude that finally got the kids out of the house and is now cruising in his dream machine wanting to be young again, so took up climbing to satisfy his midlife crisis. Let's hear your opinions (I'm sure there are some luxury car drivers just dying to flame this post!). HEHE, Doctor Who question thought. If I STEAL some rich fuckers land rover, drive it to the Valley and live in it in the parking lot illegally for 6 months, am I rich fucker or a dirtbag. I dont know, Im just asking.

To paraphrase Cervantes... "Be still dispirited man. See what you want and take it. It is yours, all you have to do id pay the price". Where's the difference between climbing and wealth building? Set a goal, throw your soul into the hard work and sacrafice, struggle, fail, struggle again, fail again, struggle again - success. Change the words and your whining sounds like a sport climber disparaging alpinism from the parking lot. Go ahead big boy, run it out. Take on more debt than you could make it 10 years at a good job. Raise a family at the same time for the R/X rating. Give up evenings for night school. Have the bank call your loan for the forced bivy. Spend your savings consulting with bankruptcy attorneys and feel like you're losing toes. Go totally anerobic trying to find salvation before your consume yourself from the inside out. And when all seems lost, find yourself pulled forward by the warm glow of optimism deep within your soul. The one that no one can extinguish. Feel the smile spread across your face as you realize that by doubling down, changing the rules and pushing forward yet again you might, just might, find a way out of this hole. Then - THEN - you will understand. Jeff

Do "rich people" and their cars only bother you at the crags, or are you irritated at them anywhere? I just don't see why it matters. New fancy car or old car, fancy climbing clothes vs. regular stuff, whatever. The color-coordinated $100+ outfit that a girl next to me is wearing does not affect my climbing at all... Of course I understand that guys are not so immune to hot outfits on members of opposite sex (or rather, to the body parts that are carefully revealed by the said outfit)...

To be rich and able to afford all those cams! Cha-ching! I hate money too. I would rather use cans and sticks for pro--much more natural. I also have an aversion to toilets and modern amenities. If any of you have stepped in my poo at the crag, I'm sorry. I do chalk over my hands so that you never come into contact with my excrement directly. Go Mother Earth! GT

sounds like a personal problem......do yourself a favor and purge that poison from your head. I met a very poor woman lately who had joined a local temple. A rich guy who felt sorry for her gave her his "old" mercedes.

Hmmm...personally, I always hoped I could get really rich and retire young IN ORDER to have more time to climb. Guess I was wrong and I'll have to turn in my climber card. This whole thread origin sounds like the sour grapes of an unemployed kid with no discipline or something. Class warfare is for pandering politicians, not climbers.

Good points from all of you climbers; rich, poor or stripper devotees... Nice to hear that most agree that you shouldn't judge someone by their car, clothes or the number of piercings they have...However, this is SoCal and the sad fact is most of us judge by the car you drive. Weird - I only mind the luxury cars in the parking lot. Once on the rock, I could less if the climber next to me has a grip of cash or not, as long they are being cool then it's all good. For all of you that JUDGED ME by my post....(you know you shouldn't do that)...and thought I was young and poor....you've been "had". I guess, initally we all judge by what we are presented with!

I just happen to be a rich f___ but do not resent you for calling me this.I am very well off but to look at me you would never know. I drive and old beat up Ford and most climbing clothes that I wear are worn pretty heavily. My gear is used well and nothing in the way of bling on the outside. That is because I am wealthy in a way that matters, not in the shallow Way to which you are referring. The wealth I am talking about is the experiences I have had in my latter life. I have more wonderful memories of things than I have photos and I travel with two cameras most times. It is because I have no money but wealth is what I get out of life by putting my all into it. I will never retire comfortably but have enough memories to sustain my wrinkled old ass well into retirement. If wealth is what you seek then money is a tempting thing but your soul cannot be fulfilled with it. If you seek to find enough of anything be a giver and not a jealous shallow person but the one who contributes every chance he can. Never give any mind to money much since this attitude took over so seeing others in this position just isn't an issue. Bob

In reply to: For all of you that JUDGED ME by my post....(you know you shouldn't do that)...and thought I was young and poor....you've been "had". But if people were judging you by your post, at least they're judging based on your personality (or at least your online persona). I have to say that I don't see the logic in owning a luxury SUV. I'd rather worry less about a mid-range vehicle capable of the same environments. I scratched the hell out of my '96 Cherokee about a month ago. I'm hoping some of it will buff out, but I'm not all that concerned. Take an Expedition on that road and watch the owner's face. My wife and I bought our first new car this year (a Prius), and I'll be damned if I'm going to apologize to someone for finally making a decent living. Somebody at the crag can bitch about how real I'm not keeping it while I try to remember the last time I had to gas up. I was a lot more classist in my youth. Then I started realizing I knew some people with money, and some of them are wonderful people: kind, down to earth, generous. Some are jerks. These traits aren't reserved for a certain segment of the financial spectrum. These days, I try to judge others individually and waste less of my energies on pointless things like hating someone for what they're driving. Do you have something against aid climbers, with their enormous racks and fancy haul bags?
