Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin dead

Can't Post

The Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin has died this morning local time. He was diving on the Great Barrier Reef near the Low Isles which lie off Port Douglas in far north Queensland. He was filming a documentary on stingrays when he was stabbed in the chest by a stingray barb. He subsequently suffered a heart attack from the exruciating pain.

Most of us over here are in shock at this sudden demise of a very famous Australian. Like him or loathe him he was larger than life. I visited his crocodile park and reptile zoo a couple of years ago and I will say this that he was the consumate professional as far as how he looked after the animals in his charge.

He will be missed.

Bye Steve.

Quite a character, the Crocodile Hunter.

Only 44 yrs old. Damn shame that, and even worse since he has wife and baby daughter and son.

Yeah, that's a real shame, Phil. Steve Irwin was one of my nine year old son's heros.

This makes me very sad.

Doing what he loved, no doubt... I've always enjoyed mimicking his "crickey! look at the mandibles on that thing!" when referencing a woman's overly large breasts.

Farewell Steve...

Just read that... that really is sad to hear. Much as many of us joked about him, he was good at what he did and seemed to genuinely love every minute of it.

Thoughts and prayer go out to his wife and children.

I really cannot believe it.... this truly is a sad day. He was a well-respected man, despite his antics. He certainly ran his life with passion, plenty of determination and put 110% into everything he did, including his family. He did a lot for conservation and for Australia.... his legacy will continue to do so, I'm sure. I feel most for his young family.... our thoughts are with you.

:(

Next time I stare down a croc, I'll be thinking of you Steve.

He was my kid brothers hero, and although he did annoy me sometimes I have huge respect for him and his work. He died doing what he loved and he definitely made a positive impact in the world, so IMO, he lived a Good life.

My sympathies and prayers for those he left behind.

What really amazed me when I heard the news was the way he died. As soon as I saw it on CNN I figured a snake/croc/dragon related incident, not rays! He dealt with some of the deadliest animals in the world on a regular basis, and died interacting with animals that thousands if not millions of tourists interact with every year... hell, even I've done it!

A stingray death is totally bizarre.

Well, he died with a flair.

Really tragic for the wife and kids though. Really too bad.

It is always sad when the world loses one of it's eccentric characters. Steve Irwin was one of those personalities that people claimed to hate as they sat glued to the television watching his antics. The world will miss you crocodile hunter.

We were shocked to hear this news last night. Not only did Steve bring a new genre of nature documentaries to the world, he did it with a passion that was nothing short of intoxicating.

Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

My kids in Venezuela grew up with Steve (in Spanish) and they are just as upset as the rest of us that this outsized character, who brought so much enthusiasm to the world, has died. He was a great conservationist and a unique character, and surely will be missed. A one of a kind, was Steve . . .

Not to speculate too much, but if I had to wager, I'd say that it wasn't the actual sting that killed him, but that he pulled the stinger out of his chest. Removing an impaled object is a very bad idea under all but a select few situations.

Still and all... very sad.
