I had to go NYC to Boston on Monday and took one of the cheap bus services running out of Chinatown. From NY's Chinatown to South Station - going up it was 3-3/4 hours; coming back it was 4-1/4 with a 15 minute break along the way. This is faster than I can comfortably drive the route. And the price: $15 each way!!!!! That is WAY cheaper than driving. Similar companies go to Washington, Phillie, etc. I would guess that there are similar companies on the West coast going between the major markets. The only catch was sitting next to a very proper little Chinese women on the way back - an economist at MIT - who silently farted the whole trip. But driving with climbing partners is no better. And rather than driving, I got to make a big dent in my book, Avalanche Terrain, that I just haven't been able to get into without a big block of time. Highly recommended. Edit: Roundtrip: $35 NYC to Wash DC; $24 NYC to Philli Best, Kim
