It seems that the more popular outdoor sports become, the more prevelanet the element of "poseurism" becomes. Here is some humor. YOU might be a poseur if: -You own just one carabiner that is clipped to the outside of your backpack. -You wear your approach shoes around but only to hang out in coffee shops. -You introduce yourself as rippin' skier. -You own more than one pair of climbing specific pants. -You duct tape the crap out of your water bottles but have never done a big wall. -Your mom buys you your gear. -You hang out dressed to ski... at the base of the mountain all day. -You try to get a goggle tan. -You love to talk about the gear that you own but never actually use it. -You talk loudly about yourself at the crag so everyone can hear you. -You slap stickers all over your new car (that mom bought you) to look "core." -You bought an expensive, lightweight, 4 season, expedition tent...for car camping. -You are known at the office as the "outdoorsy guy" because you talk about rock climbing and drive a Hummer. -You drive a Hummer... period. Feel free to add to this list.

In reply to: -You own more than one pair of climbing specific pants. Wouldn't owning more than one pair of climbing specific pants mean that you climb more than one day a week?

I duct tape the crap out of my bottles, and barely climb outside even. But I do backpack with them quite a bit. (if you're in bear country, always keep one free of tape. that way it doesn't become a smellable)

What I meant about the specially designed pants was it is stereotypical to see poseurs lounging around in P'rana-wear and spraying endlessly about themselves. Even though I actually have two pairs of climbing pants myself, they just make such a fun stereotype!

-you pull your rack out of the pack on a sunny day and blind everyone within 300m because it's so shiny -you set up a toprope on a sport climb with no intention of leading it, yet you still clip every bolt on the way down so it LOOKS like you lead it -you have a 3 year old helmet without a scratch -you've only scambled one peak, but your mountaineering boots are on their third sole -you live in Saskatchewan and have climbed trad once, but refer to yourself as HARDCORE! -you refer to yourself as HARDCORE -you encourage your friend to change your nickname to HARDCORE -you gave yourself your own nickname -you think pulling plastic has glory -you don't really know what half the gear you own is used for, but you have it -you call biners snafflelinks (I've heard this lotts at the crag) -your car cost more than your rack :boring:

Bragging on the internet (high speed DSL) about how much of a dirtbag you are. Wearing your rack at the gym your biners match your draws and runners you own a TNF Denali or Nuptse jacket AND its not black or red you refer to your 'draws as a "sport rack"
