Planning a trip next summer(ish). I want to go to Japan / Vietnam. What is a good time of year for Vietnam? Where is the good climbing in Japan and Vietnam? Any other advice?

There's plenty of climbing in Japan. However, a car will be needed to access most of it. Mt. Hourai in Aichi Prefecture has world-class, hard, sport climbing. Ogawayama (in Nagano Pref, I think) also has some of Japan's best Trad. Or so they say. I never got to that one, unfortunately. But when you ask for good climbing, Ogawayama is usually the first place people mention. I believe there's also some good climbing in the Osaka area, but I forget the name of the crag.

I found the best plan of action for accessing the crags was to go to a gym and make some nice Japanese or Gaijin friends with cars. It gives you not just a ride, but someone who knows the area. Good to have in a country where not much English is spoken and many signs (and guidebooks) are written in Kanji.

Going to Japan.... Get in touch with bill_in_tokyo

He can point you in the right direction as well as reccomend a time to go. As stated above (trophy, by the way) you'll need to find someone who'll be willing to show you the areas, as the guide books are all in Japanese. Check out www.ogawayama.com for information on Ogawayama. It can be a real pain in the ass to get to with out a car, but it can be done...

The middle of summer is a real oven with humidity out the wazoo, unless you are up in the mountains.

Fantastic! Thanks! I think I will be in the Osaka area. My mother wants to visit the Kutani manufacturing places in Kyoto. So, now that Japan is taken care of... How about Vietnam?

Hi,

You can visit our website (partially in english)
www.vietclimb.com
See albums, and the different locations in the north for climbing.
Ha Long bay is the must.

Hi there,

Hopefully, you're still planning a trip out east. My friend Onslo and I are two Americans living in Halong Bay on Cat Ba Island developing climbing here. vietclimb.com is great website to get beta on the cliffs that were bolted in the 90's. These routes are all bolted using expansion bolts and considered unsafe after one year due to the corrosive elements of the rock and salt. Some bolts being close to a decade old is really risky. By next summer we will have quite a few new routes up along with our website. Feel free to get in touch with me for any info.

Hi there,

Are you going to stop over in Hanoi in March? It can be an idea to discuss and to exchange information on the old and new routes.

Please feel free to contact me @ 0912104767
