Well me and my friend were camping in the Looking Glass area last weekend when on Friday night we heard some sort of howl about 50 yards away from our site? the next day some dude told us that they were re-introducing wolves to the area. Is this true?? or was it just a Coyote we heard?

If it was 50yards from you it wasn't a wolf. I'm pretty sure there are no wolves around looking Glass. Iwould say the cloest would be WI or MI.

I'm gonna guess coyote or feral dog. I could be wrong, but the only NC-based wolf reintroduction I've heard of is of red wolves in northeastern NC, not the mountains.

The red wolves so far have only been reintroduced in northeastern NC, so what we probably heard were coyotes, but for the badass factor we'll just tell people it was a pack of timber wolves. T-Wall calls, C-Dock.

If it was a Timber Wolf, you would not have had to ask ifit was a wolf. KInd of like a rattlesnake rattle. You know when you here it.

You were probably hearing coon hounds. That area is pretty popular with the coon hunters. I remember being up on tits and beer when a pack went baying past, with one lone slow dog a few minutes behind. That's my guess, but, hey, I wasn't there...

It was more than likely a cayote... I have had several 50 yd. and in sightings of them in NC and VA. One time me and my partner were really quiet while climbing and one got within 20 feet before it realized that we were there.

It's bear hunting season right now. A lot of hunters use dogs. A few years back I was camping near the Nose, up at the end of a road. On a regular basis, hunters would drive up to our site and sit in their trucks, talking on the radio. They all had a bunch of dogs in the back. These trucks were barely street legal... lots of modifications.. especially the mufflers. Anyway, they'd sit there until someone sighted a bear. Then they'd courteously drive away. Once they got 100 yards out, it was balls to the wall, hell bent for leather. I've done my baja 500 imitation, in nice low center of gravity cars, a number of times and these guys put my best efforts to shame. These intermitent sprintfests went on til about midnight. Even if no one was at our site, you could always tell when a bear was sighted. Then after midnight, the only thing we heard were dogs... howling. Dogs get lost, sometimes for days. It's just part of hunting with dogs. My guess is your visitor was just a lost pup. And yes, sometimes they can sound pretty primal. On the otherhand, I just found this link http://www.learnnc.org/articles/wildnb0703 which includes the claim "There are coyotes in every county in North Carolina". Boy howdy. The stuff you learn on the internet.

I know it sounds crazy, but the great horned owl can make some pretty crazy noises that might be mistaken for howling. I have lived in the Brevard area for 26 years and have never heard of anyone spotting a wolf, however some coyotes have been wandering into the area over the last decade.
