Does anyone know why Nelson rocks closed? I mean, I read the blurb on their website but it is everything but enlightening. What I got from it was they closed it because it was too popular. I must be missing something... Damn. I never got to climb there

:), I always get second hand info....but what I heard is: There was an increase in injuries over the years as nelson's became more popular. The owner cares a ton about people not getting hurt. He also wants to make a profit from his resource. So, he thought because of safety and liability it was best to shut the resource down to climbers.

Thats pretty much what I got from the website. I understand he wants to turn a profit but he doesn't really have any variable cost. I mean, his costs don't go down if no one climbs. He still has to pay the mortgage but he is generating no income from the property. There must be something else.

Anyone going to be at The Climbing Wall this weekend and willing to teach me Sport? I've done plenty of top roping but want to get into the more fun stuff (trad after sport) but unfortunately all of my friends are limited to toproping as well. I've read a book with a chapter dedicated to it and also web articles and understand it pretty well, I would just rather have someone who knows it well there with me than someone who knows less than I.

I think it boils down to the fact that if he is pulling in money, then he can be sued. If someone isn't pulling in money, then they are more isolated from liability. From the threads I have followed, people seem to think his concern for safety is a bigger reason. Those people seemed to speak as though they knew him. I am sure you could search and find the 3-4 threads that covered this in better detail. Truello, Did you look at the weather this weekend???? I would like to top rope with you a couple of times first. After we climb together some, I can teach you to climb sport. The other option is to take the lesson from the climbing wall. That is how I learned. ---- I will be cleaning up from my trip to the carribean this weekend. I have been busy this week. My grandfather just received a prediction of less then 6 months to live. (No terminal illness. He is just old and there are too many sicknesses hitting him consecutively.) On top of that, I am trying to propose my PhD ASAP. Stupid work is always getting in the way. On the bright side, I haven't climbed more then twice in about two months. I suppose that is a good rest. If I can get myself back into training, I will be in great shape come Spring.

opps, I need to work on my reading comprehension a bit. truello said 'and teach sport' instead of 'or teach sport' Well, you have your answer anyways. Anyone else received the PDF about the New River Rendezvous? Anyone else planning on going?

I found the email. It doesn't say more about the upcoming NRR other then the date: May 18-20 If you are interested in the stories, I can forward the email to anyone. I can't attach the file here because it is too large.

I would much rather be outside trust me! I'd be willing to TR with anyone first. From the looks of your post(s), you look rather busy however. Not to mention I actually live in Cleveland right now. Graduated from a Pitt in December and took a job out here but finally found one back in 'burgh and will be starting Feb. 19. I travel back to Pittsburgh almost every weekend though.

In reply to: I am trying to propose my PhD ASAP. Are you planning to do that on the South Summit as well?

If we could arrange to have my PhD proposal on the south Summit, I would love it. It is a place where they just can't refuse.

I think I'm gonna go to the New River Rendezvous. How is it for someone who has never climbed anything beyond top rope? I'm going to the Red Rock Rendezvous and taking some trad clinics, but my partner and I really have no one to teach us trad or sport around here. We will probably teach ourselves somewhere small like Beam's. Well I rambled off a bit there. I'd like to meet up with some of you all at the NRR or if anyone else is going to RRR. PM me peace, chris

I think you should make an attempt to find someone to teach you about leading. You are 67 miles or one hour and twenty minutes from pittsburgh. I have and do climb with two groups of ppl from pittsburgh. One of these groups is the explorers club of pburgh and they have a climbing class. It is worth the cost of membership just for the ppl you meet. They have an active climbing group. You can find someone climbing every decent weekend. There is rock in coopers that you can learn to trad climb on and maybe even sport. You can always go to the new with ppl and learn to lead sport there. I would help you but you should be able to find someone closer. the explorers club can be found on the net. ecp.org I think. It is much safer to learn to lead with someone who knows what they are doing.

i 2nd charley on that: visit www.pittecp.org and check'em out. learning sport/trad on your own? maybe as a last resort, but i would at least try to find someone to show you a few things, give you some feedback, at least the first couple of times you try it. that said, there are a couple of places that i'd recommend for 1st time sport: 1) breakneck rock: it has a simple 5.5, 2 bolt route that's about 20 feet high. 2) logtown quarry, lisbon, OH: has a really easy 15 foot, 1 bolt sport climb in the back area- obviously created for people to practice on. probably a 5.1 !!! 3) NRG, bubba city, beer wall area: has the easiest sport climb at the New "Near Beer"; a 5.5 route, 3-4 bolts. but feel free to tag along with one of us, once the weather clears up. victor

victor999 wrote: but feel free to tag along with one of us, once the weather clears up. What they said. I would be willing to meet up with you when the weather improves too. If you don't know sport, you can still have a BLAST at NRR. There are clinics and there are a few areas where you can set up top ropes.

I know some of you may think I'm crazy, the rest of you know it. I drove down to the mill today to check the rock. Most of it was snow covered and wet, not to mention very cold. My secluded kinda protected wall was ok but the rock had a coating of ice or frost on it. I didn't take my pad or shoes out of the van when I went down. I did part of a cold traverse in hikers and decided it wasn't worth trying to climb. Man, 38 degrees and still iced up. It's going back to 22 tonight and tomorrow. sucks. six days to groundhog day then six weeks of winter.

Hang in there (or travel south)! As soon as I stepped outside today I had an urge to climb. I knew anything would be pretty wet though. 40° in the winter feels like a summer day and would be great for climbing if it wasn't for the damn snow. Good for you to actually get out and check the rock though!

I have climbed there when it was 30 with snow on the ground. Some days the rock is ok and other times it isn't. I gotta go check.

this is non-climbing related (who cares?) but claire and i are going to try our hands at cross-country skiing on feb. 17 -- the PA xc skiing association is offering free lessons that day and rentals are pretty cheap. http://www.paccsa.org/ for more info. we'll be sans kids and if others want to join, let us know and perhaps we can carpool. we've been wanting to xc for a long time, and this seems like a good opportunity. victor

Victor, Not sure I'll make it that weekend, but my Dad and I usually try to get out cross-country skiing a few times a year. If you guys enjoy it, I'd be up for going sometime this spring. ~Jason

That sounds great. Lam and I will plan on coming to the xc gig. On a climbing note....Brain took Jim, Drew and myself ice climbing at Confluence yesterday. It was pretty fun. We had only 2 pairs of boots + crampons and one set of ice axes. This wasn't too big of a deal though. We still were able to get on a few top ropes. I don't think I am a huge fan of ice climbing, but I had fun despite the insane hike. We were really glad that there was another group of climbers at confluence. We would not have found it without their trail.
