I have some climbing rope but the person I got it from did not know anything about it. Is there anyway to determine what kind it is etc. It seems to be a dynamic rope at least it streches when I pull on it. Its overall color is blue, with 2 side stripes of red and white. It measures somewhere around 10mm +/- 1mm. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Why does that look like stuff I bought at Home Depot to tie my canoe down to the roof of my car?

Really or are you kidding? You could be right I just assumed it was climbing rope.

Yeah, it looks like guy-line, nothing more. You have no idea where it's been, so it'd be best to dispose of it. There are only a few truly licensed places where this can be done in an ecologically sound fashion, and I happen to live near one. Send me a private message and I'll give you my address so we can take care of this.

It really does. But it's just a picture and nothing to compare it to. Note:might want to check in the gear forum.

So you got it from someone who knows nothing about it, impying they got it somewhere.... Sounds like the type of "climbing rope" I wouldn't trust to tie my dog up with. Make a rug out of it, if you look around online you'll find how this is done.

Agreed. The braids of a climbing rope are much finer and that just looks like typical nylon boat rope or something.

look at the ends of the rope, there should be a rubber ferrule looking thing with a marking with a 1 in a circle. If there is not, its not a single climbing rope. If there is a 1/2 in the circle you need to find a mate for it because it is a double rope and can only be used in pairs. My recommendation: Make a rug or cut it up, pull out the core and make it into a bracelet. Just going by the picture it looks like what I got at true value for $12 to teach a ground class on belaying. Your rope, along with your belay loop and belay biner, are pretty much the only things in your chain of protection that is not redundant. As a result I am always really anal about my ropes. More so than any other piece of gear. -Oliver

Ok thanks for your help guys. I wasn't planning on climbing with it anyway. If anything I'd just use it for safety mountaineering rope, or just random uses. Ok thanks again for everyones quick, and helpful responses. Happy climbing.

If you decide its not a climbing rope I would recommend strongly against using it anywhere your life may depend on it. the stuff I got that looks just like what you have was rated to 81 lbs. less than half my weight.

I know, I put up a smartass rude noob comment the other day and got yelled at. However, as to the OP...I think you got your answer. Don't climb on that, that just looks like basic Wal-Mart nylon braided *not woven* rope. We heart you, and we don't want you to go bang bang squish squish.

Coolclay wrote: If anything I'd just use it for safety mountaineering rope... Also not wise, though I would presume you probably aren't doing any mountaineering anyway. Don't use this rope for any application where someone or something could get messed up if it breaks. Get yourself a real rope... watch SteepAndCheap.com, REI-outlet, and SierraTradingPost.com for deals and you can save a bunch of money.

Fine, Target. Fall, hit a shelf on the way down, hit ground, squish, squish again when your buddy kicks you to see if you're alive (which you're not).

Cut about a Inch off the end and then take a pic of the core before you melt it closed and post it that will give us more to look at. from the pic you have I'd have to say no go as a climbing rope.

Looks like good rope to tie tarps in trees. Good to keep you dry, not to keep you alive.
