In reply to: After living in Fayetteville for a little more than a year, Wendy and i are certain that there's no reason to ever leave. So, after a about 2.5 months of house searching and some pretty serious loan shopping, we have a contract! We're buying a cute wooden ranch hizzo a stone's throw from Cottontop and the Hawks Nest Boulders. It needs work, but we have the inside line on a sweet, state-sponsored, low-interest rehab loan. All in all, if it takes the maximum allowed for rehab, the house will cost us 25,000 less than the smaller house next door is listed for. Bummer for them, but great for us. Where is the closest intern'l airport? When is the next eastern rc.com gathering?

Good God! A lot of activity here. Looking for a place to crash, I guess. Let's see... Epoch: no traversing on the house. The stone is just a veneer, unfortunately. PTC: Gracias, amigo! Granite_grrrl: We just kinda stumbled onto it. The firsat time we saw the house, we weren't interested because of all the work it needs. Then we found the loan... it was easy from there on. The price, including rehab, is far lower than our budget. We stepped into the bidding war and shut it down with one bid. Don't think we're rich or anything. This is WV and we're talking about 55k for the house, plus renovations. Score! Legs: 20' high ceilings!? Good god. Macherry: We've already hosted several. What's a few more? jakedatc: Come on! (See Thomas' note below.) maww: Thanks! JR: Krillen covered it. Snoangel: Thanks! Thomas: The New River Rendezvous is May 18-20. It's the biggest and best rendezvous in the US. That ain't no lie, and... it's free. Fly into Charleston, WV and we'll pick you up at the airport. Partners abound, some from here, too, I'm sure. Schedule a few days afterward so I can climb with you, too. Thorne: Where the hell you been old man? Weather's getting nice again. When you coming up?

snoangel wrote: snoopy138 wrote: $55k?!? I think d_a paid that much for his corner cardboard box in HB. No, that was probably just for the land under the cardboard box. I wish... I'm part of the Huntington Beach Homeless Box-owners Association (HBHBA): kinda like a condo, I don't really own the land directly below my box. I paid $125k to own 1/325th of the sidewalk between 16th and 17th, from PCH to Palm Ave... between sundown and sunrise of course.

Yeah, land and homes here are pretty freaking inexpensive, but all that's about to change. While the rest of the country is cooling off, we're just getting started. A one-quarter-acre lot in one of the new rich-people developments just sold for a half million USD. Our new place is only about a half mile from the Gorge itself. Might have to try to pick up a couple more acres to go with our one. In other news, we qualified for our loan last night. [sarcasm]Whew... that was tough. [/sarcasm] We all (F-ville residents) want more good people to move here. The ultimate goal is to take over the local gov't with environmentally and socially conscious people who understand the need for intelligent growth that doesn't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs (the Gorge). So let's go, folks. Get yours while the gettin's cheap.

Wouldn't it, though? That's how we started. We rented the house we're still in now with three other friends. $350 per month shared five ways... do the math. Hmm... idea. I would be willing to do some legwork to find a nice big house for rent that could work as an RC.com (unofficial) co-op. If a group of you folks wanted to go in together on a hizzo, sort of time-sharish-like, it could be exceptionally inexpensive. In fact, we'll be leaving this particular house in a couple/few months. It's cold in the winter, but other than that, it's been pretty good to us. Includes horseshoe pit.

Congratulations, Jay and Mrs. Jay! That house just looks like a happy house. I wish you many years of wonderful memories and fantastic experiences. I think you are smart to be thinking about getting some more land, as you are right, that the prices are going up. If you can do it - do it. Sweet investment that may pay back several times over.

Thanks, Terrie. We need how much pain the renovation costs us. If we can get through it with a bunch of savings left over, we just might.
