APRIL ASSIGNMENT: Self Deprecation

Post whatever you think is your BEST PHOTO TO DATE.

If you can easily (or not so easily) pick out flaws in your own photo, don't post it! This means - no butt shots(unless you've got some mind-blowing new interpretation), no bad exposures, no "almost" good photo's, etc...

If you don't think you have anything of quality, don't post.

One of the hardest parts of photography is seperating yourself and your experience of capturing an image, from the image itself. Others do not necessarily care what you went through to get the image, they evaluate it only on what their eyes see.

I like this one a lot : the face is well lit, the shaking left hand, the snow, the beanie (note that the climber is NOT bouldering!) and the lake show how cold it was, the colors are soft (a diversity of blues and browns). The grain is not excellent as this is a printed pic scanned at home.

Thanks Alpine, I was going to put one together this week since I am on break, but some Japanese villagers showed me a cliff they say we can climb on.

I didn't have very heigh expectations, but, since it was rainning anyways, I decided to go check it out. Thank God for the rain. We now have Okinawa's first sandstone cliff. The wall is roughly 80 meter high and half a mile long in the middle of the jungle.

Most of the wall is slightly overhanging and offer RED River type handholds. Spectacular. I spent the last two days cleaning and drilling new routes. I polan on being there every day this week and looks like I'll have 15 routes by Saturday.

Onotherwords, Climbing took priority. I love this assigment idea and will post something for sure.

Eman
PS: I think we may have met in NOrth Corolina a while back. North Side of Looking Glass. I was trying to free the first pitch of Invisible Airwaves and aided the rest. No important.

Not exactly a climbing shot but certainly something that appeals to climbers. The Tower of Babel in Arches.

This one's probably my favourite to date. An insanely cold, foggy day in the middle of winter, aid climbing Passport to Insanity. The easy scramble up and down to the photography ledge took on a whole new character with the loss of feeling in my fingers.

A blow-up of the action:

The crux for me is trying to pick just one photo...

So, one for sport, one for trad, and one for bouldering?

Maybe it's the snow in mid-April (!) frosting my brain, but if the assignment is to post personal bests, how is that self-deprication? Isn't it self-confidence and love? Posting something you think is weak is deprication.

Have you picked your personal best? To do so requires much deprecation. Again, one must remove themselves from the experience of acquiring the photo and put themselves into a position of pure visual observation. In other words - analyze the crap out of your image. "Almost" doesn't cut it. If even one tiny element in a photo somewhat bothers you - don't post it in this thread.

Once more people post photos, then the 2nd half of this exercise will begin - the true self deprecation.

correct me if i am wrong, but doesn't the parameters of this just weed out the photographers who are easily satisfied with their work from those that aren't?

I'm not a great photographer by any means so maybe it's different for ones who are... but I am a musician and an artist.. and as one I know first hand that I am NEVER satisfied with my work, even when to others it appears perfect.

If the goal of the thread is to get some really great "best of the best" pictures... then I'm afraid you won't get the number of them that you like.
If the goal is to get photographers to look more closely at their work... you may succeed, but i feel that very few will post.

I may be wrong.
