After years of trying to keep Hells Caynon off the radar it seems like the good old days are now over! The NFS has a meeting set for June 23 2007 to talk about the Future and Climbing in the Caynon.
Most of you never even knew that there is climbing in Hells Caynon let alone the 400 routes that cover the Limestone Walls of Hell. What we need to do is have a show of Heads (Climbers) at this meeting so the NFS knows that the climbing is not a Fluke and there is a very REAL future for the Climbing!
It's going to be HOT as Hell in late June, but there is a lot of shade with a lot of climbing.(for all grades) Come join us for a weekend of climbing and meeting new Friends.
The camping is about as good as it gets (it's free) bring lots of ice for your beer, plenty of water and your best rock shoes.
Hells Canyon Big Bar Climbers Meeting
June 23, 2007 1:00-3:00 pm
@ The Idaho Power Conference Room in Oxbow Oregon.
The Payette National Forest, Council Ranger District is planning to hold an informal meeting to discuss future use and guidelines for the Hells Canyon Big Bar area. This meeting is open to all area users but the primary focus will specifically relate to recreational rock climbing. Your attendance and or input would be greatly appreciated and will help shape the future recreational use in this area.

The date for the Hells Canyon meeting is rapidly approaching and I'm
excited to meet and talk with each of you. I would like to keep the meeting
informal and have more of an open discussion than structured presentations.
To keep it productive I have compiled the tentative agenda below.
1:00 -1:10 - Introductions
1:10 - 1:40 - Discussion of "Clean Climbing Ethics" (review Aram Attarian
Clean Climbing Paper and Smith Rock Climbing Guide)
1:40 - 2:00 - Jim Egnew, Presentation on the Caves in Hells Canyon
2:00 - 2:15 - Jon Almack, Eagle presentation
2:15 - 3:00 - Group break out, Discussion and Development of "Climbing
Guidelines" for Hells Canyon.
3:00 - 3:15 - Question/Answer Close out, discussion of annual spring
meeting?
If you have any suggestions or would like to discuss anything else please
feel free to e-mail me and I will fit it into the agenda. My e-mail list is
limited to folks that I have met or talked with directly. Please feel free
to invite anyone else that you think may be interested in the area and it's

kind of ironic.....
for years (maybe not you) but a lot of the hell's canyon crew from OR and WA just would not give out beta for Hell's. I was foruntute enough to hook up with a few of the OR guy's, helped with a few projects and got a lot of beta and copies of their personal topos. But for the most part, everyone wanted to keep this place as their own secret crag............. and now when your access is threatened you want help from joe schmo climber.
.....kind of ironic

Howdy Mike,
I'm so glad you asked... I was not even going to update this after the Meeting.
The Meeting went well from the start, although it felt more like a Meet and Greet. As a group of 15 Climbers we sat and listened with smiles on our faces as they address there concerns. As a group of 15 we were able to stay focused and answer there concerns.
The best part I think... is that the USFS came away with more than what they hope for, they found a usergroup of Climbers that are willing to do the hard work that it has/will take for the Climbing in Hells Canyon. They believe that we as "Climbers" have been doing a good job so far... at "policeing" ourselves. They also believe that "The Climbers" will help be some of the areas best "Stewards" that they can have and they are also looking forward to the Future of Climbing in Hells Canyon.
With all that being said... We still have a lot of work to do.
