I am considering taking a job in Augusta, GA. I have looked online, but cannot find any gyms (or outdoor climbing) in the area. Can someone please let me know where the closest place to climb is and if there is a gym in the area. If there is no gym, where is the closest one? Thanks!

I'm in Columbia, SC. We have several climbers that drive up here from Augusta to climb at our gym, Stronghold Athletic Club. Apparently it is the closest gym to Augusta (closer than Atlanta) and is about an hour's drive. If you want to go climbing outside, I'm only familiar with what is closest to Columbia, which may be the same as Augusta. That'd probably be Crowders, near Gastonia, NC, Rumbling Bald, near Chimney Rock, NC, or one of the smaller crags like Big Bradley Falls near Saluda, NC. That is, unless you boulder, in which case, I really have no idea.

Closest gym is the one in Columbia SC. as far as top rope stuff there really is nothing left available in the Augusta area. Unless you consider the Rae's Creek Aqueduct (a 25 foot wall) there is a handful of boulder spots around that can provide a various circuit from cutting up your hands to slaps and slopes. Thankfully there is some 'destination climbing' within the 1.5-3 hour driving range for the weekends, but if you are coming from somewhere out west.... don't expect to make great advances in climbing while down here, there just isn't enough. Oh yeah, the plus side is ... the crag rarely has people on it unless you invite them out there.

There is now a 4 section climbing wall at the crossfit 4 everyone on Old Petersburg Road. At the moment there is a groupon available $15 for 1 month of climbing and $30 for 3 months. Groupon includes equipment and belay training. It's not a huge venue for climbingl, but routes are routes. http://www.crossfit4everyone.com/wall.htm http://www.groupon.com/deals/cross-fit-4-everyone?pt=aUX7x1jAAAAD0cTKXkHFKr_ZLozKjPdoK

There isn't a lot of climbing to be found in augusta. I think this town is large enough to be able to support a climbing gym. Is anyone interested in discussing this further with a possibility of plans to open one?
