Hello to all the rock-addicts out there from good old Güllich-Germany! We've decided to check out CA for it's best sports climbing and boulder spots. Now we could use some suggestions on where to go in the wintertime. You'll get some hints on where to go to in Europe in return Well, in case you already know... Thank you anyways!

You can boulder to your heart's content at JTree, and may be you can hire a guide for few days for climbing if you don't lead trad? New Jack City isn't worth traveling from Europe.

But if he's in Joshua Tree, and wants to sport climb, it's probably worth travelling an hour to New Jack. Nobody's mentioned the Bishop area. For sport climbing and bouldering in the winter in CA, that's probably your best bet.

What part of California? North or South? There's (litterally) 1000's of bouldering projects at J-Tree, but not much sport. Owens River Gorge/Bishop is definitely a destination. ( A little cold for me in the winter, but hey- you're German). There's several sport climbing areas in Southern California that you can climb year round. Northern California is wetter and colder in the winter.

The Valley is awesome in the winter, as long as it's not raining. It's not sport climbing, but you shouldn't miss the Valley if you're a climber visiting California. If you're near the Valley in the winter and want to climb sport and/or if it's raining, you can climb the Jailhouse (and a few other spots nearby). It's so overhanging you can climb in a full rainstorm and never feel a drop. PM me if you want info.

It would be useful if you would indicate at what level you sport climb.

San Diego is a decent alternative/diversion if you get tired of Joshua Tree. Bouldering - Mt. Woodson has tons of bouldering; lower elevation, likely more mild temps than J-Tree (it gets cold in the high desert!). Also tons of boulders in one simple spot. Sport Climbing - El Cajon mountain is a multipitch bolted face on solid granite. Not sure if it is worth focusing on in a trip all the way across the pond, but you can get good 3 to 5 pitch routes. Some are all bolted, some trad, some mixed. A contreversial spot due to its dense bolting, but pretty sweet nonetheless. An easy hit if you head to Sandy Eggo.

Bishop is not quite so cal, but the bouldering is amazing. 5 hours~ drive from LAX. Owen River Gorge has really good sports as well, tons of routes at all level. Have fun and be safe. |

We climb about 7a to 7b+ red point, harder projects possible, if that is any help. I am not familiar with your scale system. It takes some getting used to. But no tread climbing , only bolted routes. Thanks again, for all your replies. And if you need hints on climbing spots throughout Europe, go ask. Lezard In that range for winter sport climbing in SoCal, I'd recommend Echo Cliffs, New Jack City, and Red Rock (which is actually in Nevada). Keep in mind that Southern California does not have world class sport climbing. Can't help you with the bouldering. Jay

The Riverside Quarry is good that time of year as well. There are many photos on this site to give you an idea of what the climbing there is like.
