There will always be a battle between different types of climbing as long as there are different personalities in climbing. Dat's da facts!

Its nothing new. Mountaineers said that the scottish "Hill climbers" (small and steep mountains) were not real climbers. "Hill climbers" said rockclimbing was "just training" for real climbing. Rockclimbers dubbed sport climbing as not reall climbing. Sport climbers say bouldering is not climbing. It is really just the attitude that you need to be bettter than someone else, so as technical ability gets better and better, certain climbers need to justify their love by claiming that indeed, this newfangled type of climbing is far beyond my physical abilty but I am sure they, could not do what I have done as it is so much larger/complex/involved. The fact is, it is a natural progression of ability. Trad climbing led to harder Mountain Routes . Sport climbing created training ground to push trad and mixed climbing standards. And now bouldering is creating incredibly strong sport climbers. In our lifetimes I would expect to see high mountain routes with V numbers attached to them. When this happens, I am sure there is bound to be many feathers ruffled.

no way man, it is not a progression at all. I think they all offer something different, and you dont need one for the other.... lets take the gym for example, some people never leave...that is what they like, safe, soft landing and no topping out. so again why the attitude, what is the point? i go out and boulder and trad people look down on me....i trad and boulders laugh at me....the same people i boulder with. NO SENSE

flowin wrote: stop that is like saying if you dont dyno...you dont climb. silly. well, not really, as to throw a dyno would be to imply that you are in fact climbing, be it a boulder, a route, or a tree. i was merely voicing my own personal viewpoint I stumbled upon in the days when I was learning how to surf, in that I was cognizant of the fact that I was surfing, but that just being a participant in surfing did not necessarily make me a "surfer". There's something more essential that I was missing, never quite put my finger on... I haven't played in the surf in probably ten years or more now, though I loved it then and would probably love it again. I'm only saying there's a big difference being a participant in the sport of "climbing", and being a "Climber". It's a lifestyle thing, perhaps, where climbing in all its forms becomes a key part of one's identity. Dingus, for instance, is a "Climber" Brutus would definitely qualify as a "Climber" There are many more who used to frequent this site in the past. Alas, many (but not all) of them have been chased out or have moved on to greener pastures. It's not important really, just one man's viewpoint. I have others too.
